Earlier this week, Square Enix announced that developer Crystal Dynamics will be rebooting the Lara Croft franchise with “Tomb Raider,” with one of the main focuses of the new game being survival. Lucky Game Informer subscribers were able to get their hands on the January issue, containing details of Lara’s next adventure. The feature also includes the following image.

Game director, Karl Stewart, recently tweeted about the snapshot:
“For all of you peeps who received your copy of #GameInformer today, those are not renders, they are ACTUAL in-game screens. #forreals”
The game is definitely looking impressive; sporting what seems to be a quasi cell-shaded effect. The LT and RT commands in the bottom right corner of the image confirms that the game will available for the Xbox 360, though it’s likely it will also be launched on the PlayStation 3, despite Tomb Raider exclusivity deals in the past.

Absolutely cannot wait for this one. Hopefully it comes out in 2011. This, Bioshock:Ultimate and Gears 3 would equal an awesome lineup of games, not forgetting Killzone 3, LBP, Dead Space 2, etc, etc, etc

In my opinion, that is not nearly close to cel-shadding.
By the way, I’m now starting to doubt this is set in Crystal Dynamics TR universe: She has a ponytail! While she had one in both Legend and UW, she didn’t have one in Anniversary, and I suppose this is set before Anniversary.

This is set before any of the games have a look at this

She was 16 in The Last Revelation’s prologue and in Chronicle’s Ireland section. And she was 9 in Crystal Dynamics’s TR series when her plane crashed, in Tomb Raider Legend.
However, of all these, only the TRLR sequence isn’t a flashback. At least I don’t think it is.

She’s female, always changing hair.

Exactly what I was thinking.
I didnt realise that once you changed your hairstyle you were no longer ever allowed to go back to it later in life.

It looks partially cell shaded to me, though I could be wrong. The image isn’t exactly A-grade quality.

So what you’re saying, is it would have been an impossibility that this Lara could have even had a pony tail when she was young and once its cut off it will never grow back???

Yeah. I don’t know what I was thinking.

Last Revelation, Chronicles, Angel of Darkness, Legend, Underworld (unless you consider giant lizards to be dinos). Does any of this names ring a bell?

There are other screens of the game where they don’t look as cell shaded as this so it has lead to a lot of confusion. I think this is just an in game shot that has been stylised for the magazine. Oh and GI confirmed it will be on PS3.

Does anyone know of a way to get a copy of this mag in the uk? Judging by the scans people have posted up it, the TR article looks pretty detailed and something I definatley want to read.

To my knowlegde the magazine is only available in the US. You might be able to import one. You could also just ask someone with a copy to scan the TR coverage for you.

I believe the scans are available on certain TR based forums in high quality.

Looks good, first proper ps3 tomb raider game as well, I know underworld is out on ps3 but it’s also on ps2 (doesn’t count in my books) new console plus brand new gameplay. Could be something special.

bizarrely i think this might turn out to be good. since the last few tomb raider games have been disappointing, They won’t have people expecting too much from them!
