Yesterday’s announcement by Square Enix of a new Tomb Raider might have set tongues wagging (and in some cases, drooling) but it’s over to Game Informer who have the exclusive with all the details. The US magazine is running a cover story on the game, which is effectively a reboot of the series, and there’s a stack of new information in there.

We won’t spoil it all, as obviously the publishers want you to buy the magazine, but here’s a few bullet points to get you interested:

  • Lara will be 21 in this game.
  • There will be “brutal” death tracks, including a “deranged” man stabbing Lara in the chest and a boulder trap that crushes her head.
  • Concept art shows a bow, shotgun and pistol.
  • Aiming is now free and not locked onto targets.
  • The linear paths are gone, with Crystal Dynamics saying the player “can literally go any direction” and “carve [their] own way to the finish line.”
  • There are “base camps” in the game which act as areas to combine items and improve skills, and also unlock fast traveling.
  • You’ll need food and water to survive.

Sounds exciting. We’re big Tomb Raider fans and can’t wait to see what happens next.

Thanks, GAF.

  3. Crystal Dynamics saying the player “can literally go any direction” and “carve [their] own way to the finish line.”

I’ll believe it when I see it. One path will lead to win, every other path will lead to near instant death, as usual.

  4. Looks good. And she looks less like Hilary Sw@nk in this new image. Which is a good thing.

  9. The last one, Tomb Raider: Underworld was a step back in the right direction but some control issues prevented me enjoying it more.

But tbh there’s a new guy in town and Uncharted leads the way for 3rd person adventure games, although I prefer Tomb Raiders puzzling elements to yet another duck behind cover shoot-out that dogs Drake every 10secs.

If they’re going to remove the aim-lock than they have to make sure the 3rd person shooter aspects of the game are 100%

On the whole really looking forward to this.

  10. Is it now forgiven that each and every Tomb Raider game be promoted as a “reboot”? To be fair it needs something because the last one was very very poor.

    • I don’t think this is a reboot. i think it’s set in the TR Crystal D. universe. I think there’s only been one re-boot (Legend) and that’s been about 10 years after the first game.

      • On the other hand, in the original series, the plane crash she survided happened when she was 21, so this could be a return to that universe.
