Next Week’s PSP2 Reveal Cited By Bloomberg 7

MCV have been speaking to “high-level sources” regarding the worst kept secret in the world – the PSP2.

As reported yesterday they are saying that a January 27 reveal is on the cards with further information coming at GDC and E3.  In what seems like a good move, Sony are aiming to get the device on shelves for Christmas (possibly as early as October), and the hand-held will support physical media as well as digital downloads which means we get the best of both worlds; real HD games we can sink our teeth into, along with bite sized gems such as Cut The Rope, and Angry Birds.

One of the most interesting things in the article is that “Sony has told licensees the device ‘is as powerful as the PlayStation 3’.”  If this is correct it would be mind-blowing, assuming the battery that comes with it is up to the task.

Whether you favour Nintendo or Sony, now is a great time to be into handheld gaming.

  1. I think the worst kept secret in the world would have to be the PSP Phone, I mean we’ve even seen pictures of the damn thing! Sony’s never good at keeping their projects secret though…

I dont really do portable gaming. However, I’ll be open minded and see what Sony can do.

    • I was about to say that…

    • I thought the worst kept secret was the PSPgo… then again the PS3 slim was also known to the public before it’s official reveal. Maybe it’s just a Sony thing…

      • The internet just tends to know everything Sony does. Possibly before half the staff know.

  2. I doubt it’s as powerful as the PS3, somehow I just do. It just doesn’t seem pheasable for a handeld. An updated PS2 yes but I dunno, we’ll have to wait and see.

    • I’m not so sure. If released in November it will be 5 years since the release of the PS3.

      • if it’s as powerful as a ps3 why dont they just make the ps3 the same size as a psp instead of having a launch model weigh 7kg.

      • Because the launch model was designed and developed over 5 years ago.

  3. As poweful as a ps3 u say? Maybe thats an over exaggeration. However handhelds and ipods always astonish me, how they get so much with so little space, how they do it i dont know. Im writting this on my ipod touch and i think the same question everytime im on, thats 2 years of it

  4. I really want to play lbp on the psp so I hope they make lbp2 for the psp2 and then I may just have to buy it.

    • As a single player platforming experience I preferred LBP PSP to LBP on the PS3

      • I did too.

      • It isn’t has good IMO but I haven’t had a great experience with create. Hopefully Cambridge are doing a sequel :O

    • You can play LBP on the PSP right now. It was developed by Cambridge with assistance from Media Molecule. It’s awesome.

      • I’m hoping there will be more sharing of assets between PS3 and PSP2, it would be cool to be able to start a game on PS3 and continue playing it on PSP2.

      • I know but I haven’t got a psp yet. It seems like a pretty bad time to buy one atm now that the psp2 is basically confirmed.

  5. I could belive it will as poweful as the PS3 as the PS3 is 4 years old now and that is a lifetime when you are talking about tech

    • Lets hope it doesn’t have a price to match.

  6. Price; what is the price of this bugger going to be?? I reckon 250+ euro.

    • Well, if it’s as powerful as a PS3, which currently costs you 300€ I guess the price must be around that because fitting powerful hardware in a small device is never cheap…

      • Sony will lose money on the device (which seems to have always been their stratergy). The 3DS and PSP2 prices maybe quite close as Nintendo like to make profit on every piece of hardware, Sony will try to get it back through game sales and licenses.

I remember the price speculation about the PSP. Most were expecting £300 but it launched at £180.

Price will probably be a bigger factor than any other regarding which one sells more. Sony will probably decide on theirs once they see what Nintendo unveil.

  8. PSP2 as powerful as PS3. Jeeeez, if you drop that thing its likely it will blow up your entire postal code by the sounds of things, that is some serious power man….

  9. Doubt it will be as powerful as a ps3, we all remember toy story style graphics bs for ps2 dont we Sony :-/

  10. How are they going to keep this beast cool and stop it melting your hands!? Interested to hear more, but I wouldn’t expect much change back from £275.

    • I’m not expecting below 300 myself, the PSP Go was 200+ at launch and it offered no new tech on the 3000. But Sony need to box clever to compete with the 3DS so who knows!

      • The way I see it is if Nintendo launch the 3DS at £200-230, that gives Sony the chance to price the PSP2 at £250 minimum as it will be a premium, HD product.

      • True, but if the 3DS is going to launch this spring then it will surely see a price cut come the holidays when Sony are rumoured to be launching the PSP2. I’m afraid people won’t see the launch v launch prices but the discount v launch prices which may negatively affect the PSP2. It’s all speculation at this point of course.

      • If they don’t include a 3D screen on the PSP2 then I think Sony may try to under cut the 3DS price. Price has been the biggest thing to hurt the ps3. They’ll also want the PSP2 to price competitively with the iTouch which will no doubt have a new version due by the time the PSP2 launches.

I would think Nintendo won’t want a price drop this Christmas as they’ll want to make money on each device (and I cna’t see the cost dropping that quickly) and they’ll be expecting that stock will be in short supply for the 3DS’ first Christmas.

      • Sony could also go for a 3D PSP2 and a non-3D PSP2 and price them either side of the 3DS.

    • Price, heat management, battery runtime… Let’s see how things will compare when both devices are out.

      • Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Really interested to see how the story unfolds.
