Microsoft has confirmed that as of next month a Kinect software development kit will be available on the PC, albeit initially limited to non-commercial use “to make it simpler for the academic research and enthusiast communities to create rich natural user interfaces”. A commercial version will follow at a later date.
Microsoft’s Craig Mundie had the following to say:
“Microsoft’s investments in natural user interfaces are vital to our long-term vision of creating computers that are intuitive to use and able to do far more for us.
The fruits of these research investments are manifesting across many of our products, Kinect for Xbox 360 among them.”

“to make it simpler for the academic research and enthusiast communities to create rich natural user interfaces”
So it is possible for a company to wave the banhammer very aggressively to reduce the impact of piracy and engage enthusiasts at the same time. Who knew?

so does it work on any pc or laptop? and does anyone know if it’ll be the same price as it is on the xbox?

I think it’s just a suite of software – you’ll probably still have to purchase the full priced Kinect hardware.

i hope so. i’m planning on getting a new lap top at some point this and i’d love to spend my time spanding up waving my hands at it

actaully is it even possible to sit down and use it for a pc? :/

All these Kinect hacks are clever and interesting, and there might also be some pc drivers made available for Move but realistically i think the future of motion control will be camera-free. At the moment it’s all confined to working within a defined space (i.e. the camera range) which is fine for some applications but limits others.

Speaking of Move, i found this interesting video, not quite the same as the Kinect hacks but worth a look. It also mentions how drift is present in all ‘domestic’ gyros and if Move were more accurate it would be classified as missile technology!
