We love tech here at TSA, so news of two PlayStation certified Sony tablets, named S1 and S2, has us very interested indeed. The S1 looks to be the iPad rival, with a design that mirrors exactly what we mentioned many weeks ago, plus a 9.4-inch display and a Tegra 2 CPU.
The S2 looks like an interesting beast…almost like a 100% touchscreen DS rival with its clamshell design, housing two 5.5-inch screens and a 1024×480 display

One word… Buttons!
CNWLshadow
100% agree- A tablet aimed at gamers- needs buttons.
Jaffa-the-Cake
It’s not specifically aimed at gamers. The S1 is a media tablet. The S2 is for e-reading, email etc. which takes advantage of the clamshell design

Im just stuck in my ways- to me PlayStation means gaming.
Foxhound_Solid
Money says you can connect a DS3 vis Bluetooth to this?
jayjay119
That would be awsome!
ultimatepunchrod
that would be the coolest thing that they could do for this
if that really becomes a feature i would consider one of these
iamtdogg
oh damn i want one now … damn you sony :)
Foxhound_Solid
I want one, I have been toying with whether to get a new Laptop or an ipad then Sony drop this bomb shell. I think I may have to get me one of those :-)
nobrainer06
I’m with you there. I’ve been holding off on an iPad because i wanted to see what Sony would bring to the table tabletwise incorporated to PlayStation. They’ll have me as a customer if I can link my ps3 games to it. Even if i am more an iOS than Android guy.

Does PlayStation Certified mean it has the PlayStation Suite, which for me is the killer app? If so the fact they don’t have buttons means things just got messy & worryingly fragmented for developers. Other than that… Beautiful
Zephyre
From the vid at about 50 seconds, it looks like they’ve gone for virtual PS buttons, at least for the dual screen thingy. Dunno how they can replicate a stick though
jimmy-google
Of course the playstation suite could determine whether there are buttons or a touchscreen interface and switch teh controls within the app rather than within the game.
Unless lots of phones were suddenly going to start appearing with controller style buttons this issue was also going to occur. Playstation suite was always going to appear on more than just the xperia play and NGP
jimmy-google
Of course the xperia play, ngp and s1/s2 all have touch screen so you can also have touch screen only games.
If Sony can implement touch screen “buttons” well then surely they can be used for every game rather than each developer reinventing the wheel each time?
The other question you have to ask is, given the choice would you rather have the option to play playstation suite games on the s1/s2 or not?

The thing is, iOS games are designed with ‘touch’ in-mind and everyone can easily avoid the few games that use the touchscreen badly (usually console ports like sports games & FPS etc), but PlayStation games are different, for a start all the PS1 Classics Minis etc are designed with buttons in mind, something the Xperia Play (and maybe a future PlayStation Phone) has, but now when you develop a PlayStation Experience certified game, playable across PS3, NGP, Xperia-Play (your largest market) you design it with buttons in mind meaning the touchscreen will either fragment developers, or just be ignored by them and games will play like bad iOS ports that use the often crappy touch joypad.

The joys of applying your software to more than the iPhone.
We knew this would happen from day 1.
jimmy-google
They look nice but any remaining funds I have are going on the NGP, can’t quite warrant a tablet.

Same here.

NEEDS ONE NOW!

Way to jump on the band wagon.
Good luck hitting them L1,L2,R1,R2 buttons….
gideon1451
In my opinion, it just seems that they’re jumping on the iPad/tablet bandwagon. & with Android, I don’t see it supporting any particularly big games, so it’s just going to end up with shedloads of minis.
That said, if they do continue with that PlayStation/Android thing they said they were doing for that PlayStation phone, perhaps it could work.
Foxhound_Solid
DS3 connectivity is a must :-)
Surely it will connect and be useable on games as an option?
gideon1451
That’s a good idea.
fattyuk
Hmmm didn’t think about that! But it they did it would be ridiculously sick if they did!! And why not ay? The DS3 is Bluetooth
colmshan1990
Or PSP/NGP.
Hamzz
If not you can use a Wiimote, ive seen the app on the market place and it seems to work pretty well :)
KeRaSh
I like the design of the S1 but it seems a little too bulky on the top side for my taste.
Some people brought up the idea of connecting a DS3 to the tablet via bluetooth. With Androids openess, shouldn’t this be possible already?
