18You know, part of me likes to think that, if Microsoft had announced the successor to the Xbox 360 at this year’s E3, Sony would have wheeled out their PS4 showreel and done the same. In my mind, both manufacturers had an emergency video showcase that would have highlighted some key titles and new features of whatever they’re working on next – they probably didn’t, of course, and in any case, we didn’t see them.
But it’s a romantic thought.
Regardless, rumours are surfacing today that Sony are going to show off the PS4 next year. This isn’t rocket science – consoles are normally teased well before they launch, and a 2012 reveal would point to a 2013 release anyway, two years from now – that sounds about right to me.
But where are these rumours coming from? Some chaps from a ‘top’ developer, by way of Industry Gamers, who wished to ‘not be quoted’. Sadly, that’s about it – there’s no more information there other than a vague ‘next year’ comment, but the site has spoken to a few analysts to get their impressions of where Sony are and what they think they’ll do next year. Naturally, most comments on the issue assume the big reveal will be at E3 where – it’s heavily assumed – Microsoft will do the same.
We won’t repeat the analysts comments, they’re no more grounded in cold hard reality than anything above. Analyse all you want, only Sony really know what’s going on. Well, Sony and whichever first and third parties they’ve entrusted with any information they’ll need to start speccing out their games, of course. None of which are talking, as you’d expect.
What is common amongst the analysts is the thought that the Wii U won’t bother Sony and Microsoft. The threat’s simply not there – not yet, anyway – and so neither party will be in any particular rush to get their next machines to market. The challenge comes from each other – if one shows their hand, the other must surely do the same. But I’m tempted to think that this generation is only just starting to click into place, with some amazing games on the horizon.
But, hey, about those showreels…

2013 would be much too soon for a PS console. To me, it feels the PS3 is only just starting to get rolling, software wise and how developers are utilising it’s power. I’d say 2015 at least. 2013 and I’ll eat my hat.

Maybe, but 2013 or well maybe 2014 would be the perfect time for the next Uncharted game, the next Killzone game and the next Resistance game.
Launch titles for Playstation 4: Uncharted 4, Killzone 4 & Resistance 4 :P

Uncharted 4 won’t be on PS4, fact. no game from Naughty Dog ever is carried onto the enxt console, Uncharted will stay on the PS3 only.

@ Awayze, if you go by ND’s history, uncharted 4 will also be a racing game. So lets hope they break it..?

Agreed. Tbh why do we need a PS4? Im not fussed about 3D, I have HD. The PS3 has bluray disks which are big enough to store whats needed. There are plenty of titles being released each year.
If it was released, I couldn’t imagine it being revolutionary.
(unless as comments say on engadget, it can play crysis 2 and blend, haha).
What can the PS4 give us that the PS3 can’t.

Hmm memory? oh and fast disc speed… the installs are a huge pain to me, there isn’t I think of but they can do a Wii ell upping the graphics a bit for as long as I care.

I agree. By 2013, the Vita will barely have gotten any wings to fly for itself, so they would want it to be established before they head along with bringing a successor to the PS4, which might cannibalize a lot of things, not including the matter of the obvious price point. Sony’s been pretty high on cross-platform connectivity more than both of its competitors and when they release the PS4 they’d want that to actually mean something.

sony can’t afford to give Nintendo more than 1 year lead.

2013 launch sounds about right to me, also.
I would be suprised if they hadn’t revealrevealed it by 2014.

What happened to the 10 year life span of the PS3 too?

It’ll probably be like the PS2. They’ll keep producing games for it until 2017 I guess then leave it to die. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t bring out a new console. 2014 sounds about right.

10 lifespan doesn’t mean they won’t bring out a new console within that time, it just means they see support for the PS3 for a 10 years. 2013 would be 7 years into the 10, leaving 3 years of PS3/PS4 overlap.

I don’t really see what more can be done in this current generation of home consoles(7th). I don’t even see Sony heading to the eighth generation anytime soon.

This is exactly what I was thinking. When ps3 was announced, I was excited because the ps2 was starting to feel dated, like a new machine would be capable of doing so much more, and the ps3 has, its an awesome machine. However, what more could a ps4 do? I don’t think its a console I’d be buying on release if it comes out in 2 years, I’m happy with what I have for the next few years (5).

Thats just the comment I made above. PS2>PS3 was a big step forward in terms of online gaming, multimedia, high-definition, blu-ray etc.
PS3 > PS4, what could it possibly have/do?
(and the > doesn’t mean greater than in this context incase anyone was wondering :P)

Let’s see what can be done more
- All games in 1080p HD and with 3D support.
- Peripherals that are now optional (pseye, move) on the PS3 could be automatically included in the box with the PS4. This means devs will know that 100% of the PS4 userbase will have them.
- More system memory; bigger game worlds without loading.
- Faster disc-drive (reduce the need to install games on the internal HDD)

It’s obvious both MS and Sony will play cat and mouse. Sony cannot afford to be last out of the blocks and whilst neither camp publish any concrete information on a new console both will sit back.
But the posturing has already begun.
There, can I be an Analyst now and get paid far too much for talking sense?

Please Sony, wait and be patient. It was wrong for the launch of this gen but it won’t be for the next!

They are going to struggle to make them as powerful as PC’s so maybe working on a way to upgrade consoles for the 8th gen to try and keep up with PC’s.

I can’t wait to see what next generation of consoles have up in their sleevez! I mean true next gen, not Wii U…

Yeah… I must be the only few that actually can see a lot of potential out of the Wii U as a core gaming experience?

I understand what the Wii U can do, but i don’t feel it as next gen when the graphics are comparable to ps3. Ofc, graphics aren’t all, but there are always improvements that can be made, and the Wii U did not improve much when you are used to good graphics.

How soon ‘PS4′ or ‘Xbox720′ are revealed might also depend partly on how well Wii U is received when it launches.

I don’t think it will make much difference to Sony’s and MS’s plans, no matter how well it does.

Sure Sony and Ms have their own schedule but if the Wii U flounders at launch neither of them would be in any rush to reveal new hardware.
