PSN “Welcome Back” Program Expires

The PlayStation Network “Welcome Back” program has now expired.  If you’ll remember, PlayStation offered up a decent selection of games from which you could pick two for the PS3 and two for PSP – included in the options was the brilliant WipEout HD – as a result of their devastating network hack.

This expiry, though, has caused a bit of a stir.  Seems like Sony have pulled the games first thing on the 3rd (as the clock struck midnight) rather than letting gamers choose their titles during today, as you might expect.  In the US, the wording saidthrough July 3rd” which we’re guessing means ‘inclusive of’.

Here in the UK the press release stated ’30 days’, and it went live on the 3rd of June

One forum user (on Slickdeals) called Sony’s customer helpline to complain, and SCEA’s Jeff Rubenstein was the target of a few questions on Twitter.  “It ended today,” he said, speaking to a journalist rather blunty. “There were 30 days to claim it, not sure why people decided to wait. We were clear from the outset.”

I’m assuming most readers here will have already got their games, but did anyone who left it until the last minute feel a bit cheesed off when the games weren’t on the store today?

  1. To be fair, excluding extreme circumstances like your internet has been down for the last month, people should have downloaded what they wanted by now.

    • yep after all they have gave away move on.

  2. It sucks for those who may not have got round to picking their free games, but honestly why would you leave it this late?

  3. You snooze, you pay for old games.

  4. Seems a little odd to pull it so quickly but you should of picked them up by now.

  5. I have no idea why anyone wouldn’t have already downloaded their games?

Seems like it’s just another excuse for people to complain.

  6. I’d be very surprised if there were that many people that were gonna leave it till the last day to redeem there freebies!

  7. I take “through” in that context as “through to”.

Like someone said above, why would you wait more than 30 days unless your internet was down.

Don’t get any uproar there may be.

  8. To be fair to Sony, a period of 30 days starting on the 3rd June does end on the 2nd July.

  9. I wasn’t sold on PS+. I didn’t sign-up to the 30 days free PS+, but i did get Infamous for free. What impressed me was that SONY also offered free movies, 3 of them i think. I watched a zombie movie, so all being said, sony were back in my good books.

    • The free movies were absolutlely godawful though… at least the games were decent.

  10. I’m only slightly annoyed, I was going to use the PS+ on my brothers account after my 30 day trial had finished to get 60 days. Bit late now though. Oh well.
