Thinking you might get your hands on PS Vita this year? Well, you might – but only from Japan.
Sony’s Kaz Hirai has confirmed that the follow up to the PSP will only see the light of day this year in its native territory, everywhere else will be “early 2012″.
“Sony Corp. Executive Vice President Kazuo Hirai said Thursday the PlayStation Vita will go on sale by the end of the year in Japan, and early next year in the U.S. and Europe,” states MSN Money.
“Hirai did not characterize the timing as a delay, but said Sony wants to be prepared with solid game software offerings timed with the hardware launches.”
He also states that the company doesn’t see any reason to drop the price despite Nintendo’s struggling 3DS.
“There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price,” he said.
We’ll see…

Not a surprise really. Shame they will miss the holiday season though, could miss out quite a bit.
Sony tend to miss the holiday season quite a lot though here, (Europe).
{ I just checked Playstation wiki to confirm my release dates for EU and found out some interesting info about how some people got shot and robbed for the PS3 when it was released :/ }
There is also a really bizarre story about one store who held a musical chairs contest as they didn’t have enough stock…rumor has it that one guy in a rush for the chair missed and ran into a lamp-post! No PS3 but a free black eye! Think I read this in Game TM back in March 07 if I remember…
ahh stupid that they miss out December and Christmas, but also a good move as there are a lot of top quality games coming out late this year so it may not sell as well as they wanted it too
Boo! Hiss! cant say im surprised. doesnt stop me being gutted though *sad face*
Yeah, but there’s the PS headset and 3DTV to buy…more time to save!
this is true
This is sort of a relief as I know I would not have bought it during the onslaught of coming months’ games.
Might import it if the price is right. That, and if games/features are region free.
This is rediculous. It has no chance if it can’t make it for Xmas launch. I think everyone will like the Vita but when it comes to parting with £200 plus, people will decide not to buy.
Agreed. Skipping the launch window really put a hurting on the 3DS, and could explain why it’s having such a hard time at the moment. If the Vita launches in January it will still have a chance methinks, but any later and Sony have missed a golden opportunity.
My money’s on a March release.
My money is on April.
Start of the financial year, all units sold at launch will bolster the first year’s figures.
The launch window has NOTHING to do with the 3DS’s current state.
Solid game software? How about some METAL GEAR solid game software? Eh? Eh? Oh.
That’s not so bad. I’ll trade my PSP-3000 in before Christmas and hope to get the maximum value for it that way.
At least this gives me more time to save the pennies.
That’s it Christmas cancelled!!! Throws toys out of pram.
