PS3 £199 Ads Appear

cheap ps3

The first ads for the newly price-dropped PlayStation 3 have surfaced as Sony starts a fresh campaign to get people to realise the difference.

It’s an attractive proposition, although individual retailers are sure to push those margins as hard as possible – you’re able to grab one for a tenner or so less already.

The strong, bold advert shown here (clickable) will feature across the nation via five thousand roadside posters, and print versions have already been spotted in the press.

We’re fairly sure the majority of TSA’s readers already have (or have access to) a PS3, but if you don’t, or are looking to upgrade to a Slim model, what do you think of the advert and is the price cut tempting enough?

The price cut’s effective as of now.

  1. Damn, literally got a new one a month ago for 250 :( Still, a great price and is bound to win over a few gamers in the lead up to Uncharted3’s release.

    • I totally forgot about UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception, after looking at that poster, man, that’d be great wouldn’t it? xD
(My friend was looking for a killer PS3 Offer last week, and brought a PS3, and UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves), man, I should’ve told him to wait a week, I feel so guilty now, lol!

  2. Oh, remember how the speculation was that this price would be for the 320GB model? It’s for the 160GB model.

    • Yep, I saw photos of European retailers piling up 320GB models and marking them at €239. This isn’t really a very big price cut in comparison to what places like Tesco had been selling it for. Still, I suppose to people who haven’t been paying much attention, this gives a marketing reason to get into their view again. It also breaks the psychological barrier of £200.

      • Its hardly much of a price cut. I got mine for £199 back in October.

      • So now (or soon enough) you’ll be able to get the PS3 for less than the RRP of £199.

  3. come on price war! need a new console as mines playing up

  4. I just bought a PS3 320GB LittlebigPlanet 2 Collecters Edition for £220 in June for my bedroom. Nice box design too xD

  5. I’ve just seen a 320GB PS3 on Amazon.co.uk for £215.20 with a choice of Infamous 2, Virtua Tennis 4 or LBP 2. Good deal I think.

    • i’d go for infamous 2, bloody brilliant game.

      • I was three clicks away from uying this last night, don’t know what stopped me from doing so but I don’t know if I’ll be able to resist next time O_o

  6. I bought one yesterday from Amazon 160gb for £192, plus I bought a 500gb HDD for £44…..so £236 for a 500gb PS3 Slim, plus I have an extra 160gb HDD which I’ll use as an external as I have an enclosure!

Now to duplicate all my stuff from “fat” 500gb PS3 to “Slim” 500gb PS3, in case one of them unexpectedly dies :(

    • Anyone know where I can get an official PS3 Slim stand like in the advert? They seem to be like rocking horse poo in the UK?

      • I have seen them pretty regularly in game in town. Other than that, Google is your friend.

Google ‘PS3 slim stand’ & prepare to be amazed! :)

      • Seriously, you can’t get an official (Sony) one anywhere, only “4 gamers” which is officially licences and looks crap as it holds BluRay cases either side of the console

      • Ah sorry, my bad – Didn’t see the word oficial the first time around.

It isn’t just the dodgy one with game spaces though (seriously, who has had their console longer than a week or two & still only has 2 games?), there are also ones with coolig fans & additional USB ports (apparently!).

As for a Sony branded one though… I’m actually as lost as you.

      • Yeah – have seen others but I’m a bit of a Sony whore! :)

      • Not official, but the footprint isn’t massive (no slots for holding 500 blu-ray cases) and it’s very cheap. It has 4 usb slots and a blue light which can be turned off, I have one and it’s fine. £3.99 at Argos – 924/5048.

      • Nice one thanks, cheers for the code too! :)

      • Haha, do you work for argos per chance DeathByNumbers?

  7. Go go Sony!

  8. Hope it works out for Sony. It’s a good price so can’t wait to see some of the figures.

  9. My fatty is slowly starting to die out on me, so this is fairly convenient.

    • Same here, think I’ll pick one up come student loan payday.

      • Yeah, sometimes I wonder if anyone actually uses a student loan for student stuff..
Think I could wrangle one by claiming it helps me learn and therefore get it on dyslexia allowance funding? :P

      • Games consoles aren’t official student stuff? News to me.

    • Same…got one arriving tomorrow. Internet speed via WiFi keeps fluctuating, only works properly via Ethernet. Once I’ve setup my Slim I’m gonna try replacing the WiFi/Bluetooth board

    • Whatever you do, perform a backup to an external HDD ASAP. I literally lost games when my launch 60 gigger shit the bed*. I now back up once a month in case I have to go through the hassle of rebuilding once again.

*Lost games were downloadable games I got for review. As these were promo versions they don’t appear in your download list. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.

      • I do a monthly backup too…I would cry if I lost everything. I want my Slim to mirror my Fat but unfortunately not everything will copy across to a different PS3 via a backup/restore so I’ll have to check all my game saves etc one by one! :(

      • Losing games is really bad, although they were free you did have to pay for them by reviewing. It seems a bit unfair that they aren’t listed in your download queue, but I guess it’s to stop you game-sharing them.

      • Youles, I’m pretty sure as long as your old PS3 is still working you can plug it into your new one via ethernet and you can clone everything across. I’m pretty sure that includes copy-protected stuff too.

      • SilverCider…I know we’ve just met, and this is all a bit sudden, but…but…I think I love you!! :)

Thanks for the link, that will save me loads of time and is great to know – cheers!!

  10. I see no need for more than one PS3, so I’m fine thank you, but a good deal for late-comers and people with broken hardware.
It’s survival of the phattest IMO.

    • Phats are king, hope mine survives untill ps4.

      • i’m on my third Phat PS3 (2 YLODs) so last september bought the 320gb slim, bloody brilliant. still keep my Phat on my other tv and comes in quite handy for playing dvds and storing photos and films

      • On my third 60GB phat. 1st one stopped reading Blu-rays (but DVDs were ok). 2nd one I asked to be replaced as it was at max fan speed almost immediately after turning it on.

£199 is fantastic. Still remember picking mine up launch day for £425 from Woolworths!

      • @ Origami Killer and ecpecially Gadbury; Remember that there are different harware revisions of the Phats aswell, mine is a 3rd gen Phat-model and is less likely to overheat and/or break as the cpu- and gpu-chips use smaller nanometer circuits generating less heat and using less electricity. So a tip to anyone buying a phat is to look for a 3rd gen ps3 as it’s likely to survive longer than 1st or 2nd gen ones. Here’s a Wikipedia entry showcasing the differences (NB: I’m still on my first PS3):
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_hardware#Configurations

      • @Kennykazey

Yes, agreed. Mine has always been the first generation phat. The fabrication process might be smaller on later generation phats enabling lower heat / power consumption, but perhaps Sony reduced the cost of manufacture by reducing the amount of physical cooling (heatsinks etc.).

Anyone know the proportion or liklihood of failure (particularly YLOD) based on the hardware revision? Are later generation phats really more reliable? Logic would say Sony improved reliability but I don’t know the facts.

    • Phat basterds :)

      *I want a slim ):

      • i’ll stick with max usb ports & bacwards compatibility, for aslong as i can.
