Borderlands 2’s Improvements Detailed

The developers of Borderlands 2 have just finished an interview session streamed live from Gamescom. They didn’t show much gameplay – about 10 seconds to be precise – but we did get some new information about the game.

They divulged that the new playable Siren character, named Maya, will have a different ability from Lilith’s phasewalk, as all Sirens have different abilities. There will be a total of four new playable characters, including Maya and the revealed dwarf character, Salvador, who has the ability to dual wield any weapon.

As far as weapons go, there will more of them, with many different manufacturers including a type of weapon that you can throw as a makeshift grenade, the size of the explosion depending on how much ammunition there is left in the magazine. You’ll also be able to trade these weapons with other players in the new trading system, which will be better than the “drop that one and I’ll drop this one” mechanic from the first game.

There’s also something for fans of split-screen, as they’ve improved the UI and you’ll now be able to take a friend into an online match with other players. When you play, you won’t be plagued with messages of ‘non-eligible’ quests any more, as they’ve found a solution for that too.

They added that they have listened to all the little problems people had with the first game and have refined or fixed them, so it feels like a true sequel. With improved vehicles controls, sounds and powersliding, this certainly sounds like the case. The environments will also be more varied, with an artic tundra area and a grassland.

Borderlands 2 is shaping up to be a great sequel.

This is out in 2012 right? Just trying to work out how many more minutes i need to wait…

    • I am with you!! ll this talking about borderlands2 made me fire up borderlands1 again and I am starting my no-die-quest once more.

  2. Improved vehicle controls :) Those were really awful in the first game. I was hoping they’d make the weapons customizable, like finding all kinds of different parts that you can add to your favourite gun, instead of the randomly generated complete weapons.
Oh, and did they mention what the ability of Maya will be, or just that it’s not the phasewalk (which actually was my favourite ability)?

    • they said a different ability as no two sirens have the same ability :)

      • No, just that it’s different. They said they’d reveal it eventually.

  3. Er… well that’s a piece of string question as you don’t know when in 2012. It could be over a year still before any potential delays.
Better to take your mind off it with closer releases like Resistance 3.

    • I’d take it over any game really, to me Borderlands shines in the lands of CO-op it was really good… I just think Resistance 3 and Killzone 3 would be so better with that..and these ones look so boring to me.

  4. I know this sounds stupid but I hope each character is more customizable with Crafting.

  5. Really hope it does manage to release in 2012.

    • I’m sure it is, I pre ordered mine the other day .

  6. Couldnt get into 1. When I have gamers drought, ill give it another pop….

    • If you get around four friends then it becomes a blast, also people still play it which is good.

  7. There better be a sniper based character.

    • There better be a companion like Bloodwing.

    • any character can be a sniper character if it’s like the original, just use a sniper rifle.
maybe some of the skills for some characters are more suited to sniper rifles, but i would assume all the characters have skill that would benefit then if they’re using a sniper rifle.

i’ve only played lilith so i don’t know the other characters, but she can use a sniper rifle just fine.

      • The skill tree for Mord was geared towards sniper skills that’s all hence my desire for another character.

      • ah, well, like i said i’ve only played lilith so i know next to nothing about the other character’s skill sets.

i expect there’ll be a sniper focused character in the sequel.
along with a heavy weapons guy and the siren may be focused on elemental skills again.

what was the last one in the original?
rifles and automatic weapons or something was it?

one option i’d like is to be able to choose what kind of skillset your character has.

as it is, if i want to play the female character i have to focus on elemental attacks.
what if i want a heavy weapon skill set? but still want a female player character.

or have two options for each character, make sure each class has a male and female version.
that wouldn’t be much extra work, there’s already a woman in the game, and there’s no visual character customisation in the game other than palette swaps.

  8. what was wrong with the vehicle controls anyway?
they seem fine to me, they work the same way they have in halo for a decade.
the cars could be a bit less grippy, and they tend to get caught on the tiniest pebble in the road and come to a complete stop, but they’re pretty good.

some new vehicles would be nice though.

    how about a bike?
i want a bike, with jets of flame out the exhausts, and machineguns on the front.
and spikes, to impale enemies as i run into them.
    (^_^)

    • They’re ok once you get use to them…. but that bike sounds so deadly.. Bandits beware!

      • Yeah I hope Gearbox are reading. MAKE THAT BIKE if you are. To be fair I found the driving a little crap but nothing that I couldn’t get used to it was just the initial ‘these controls are shit’ that I didn’t like as I expected then to be like the standard controls that you see in driving games these days.

  9. Very few games recieve my anticipation, maybe 3 or 4 a year. This one of those games.

  10. So, they had one of the best coop games for the PS3 and they are making it even better? This sounds like a dream come true! This gets better and better with every piece of new Information. GOTY 2012 in the making!
