Steven Spielberg, serial claimant of the “produced by” credit and blockbuster director, has been linked with a Halo project before. In fact, it seems like every time someone starts or repeats a rumour about Halo and Hollywood, his name is muttered soon after. Perhaps it’s because he has an obvious affinity for bombastic action and sci fi.
Anyway, it’s happening again. According to a French press release for new book, Halo: Crytum, there will be a movie release which could roughly tie in with the expected Halo 4 release date. It’s been scanned and posted on Halo.fr and seems to suggest that Spielberg and Dreamworks are on board.
According to rumours I’ve heard previously, Spielberg has shown interest in adapting one of the many Halo novels into a movie. Taking that route, rather than buying out the stuttering Universal/Fox movie rights could save a lot of money and handily sidestep any rights claims from those already tied up in the failed attempts to get Halo onto the big screen.
It’s all speculation right now but if they want a 2012 release date then they’d need to be casting and beginning pre-production about six months ago so if it is going to happen, I’d expect more news to leak out soon.

Would love to watch Halo movie directed by Spielberg also need to see Tintin =D (the trailer looked awesome!)
bacon_nuts
Don’t play Halo, but if it’s anything like those live action trailers i saw months ago it would be pretty cool. Might have to be a bit careful that it didn’t take its self too seriously though? Idk. splosions + space = fun.
Bilbo_bobbins
If its anything like Indiana Jones, then there isn’t much hope.
doug
I don’t think speilbergs to blame for the last Indiana jones film yeah I know he directed it but it was George Lucas who greenlit the final script after having 3 submitted before the final one so I can forgive him for that.

Wasn’t Peter Jackson the first director tied to Halo? I’d rather see him do it than Speilberg, he hasn’t really made anything too impressive in the new millennium.
halbpro
Surely he’s moved up to parallel status on the “Produced by” credits now with his TV series?

I’m so fed up of Spielberg….Can anyone really tell me when he did something that was truly worthy of the esteem he is held in…Schindler’s List in about ’93 for me, possibly Jurassic Park in 1994, maybe Saving Private Ryan. All of them over a decade old though.
All he has now, in my opinion, of any worth is his name and it’s banded around with so little care nowaday’s that even his name is no longer a stamp of quality. This new Terra Nova programme on Sky 1, advertised as “from producer Steven Spielberg” is a fine example. I watched it and can confirm it was an archaic drama reminiscent of something that would have done well in the 90’s. Generic cop dad, Generic doctor mother, generic angsty rebel teenage boy but looks like an older Bieber, young pleasant teenage daughter, pretty of course & generic cute littlest daughter. So predictable its unreal
Spielberg’s name attached to it probably bumped the series up a couple of million viewer (even I’m guilty of that considering my views) who will now all disappear due to its poor quality and come away thinking slightly less of Spielberg.
The same thing will happen with Halo if Spielberg gets anywhere near it, he will put his old 90’s formula of making movies to it and ruin it. We are in a different world of movies now,a post-Inception world, an era when cinema-goers/tv viewers demand much more depth and sophistication to both their characters and plot.
As soon as Spielberg gets a hold of this notion he will be awesome once again because he has undoubted ability

wow, didn’t realised I written this much. Sorry once i started i couldn’t stop LOL!! ;-)

Is this a serious post?
Jaws (the film that set the template for the modern day blockbuster)
CE3K
ET
Indians Jones movies (alright, Crystal Skull was toss, I’l give you that)
Empire of the Sun
Saving Private Ryan
The aforementionded JP and sequel
Amistad
Munich
The aforementiond Schindlers List
to name a few
Man alive Im not sure you’re in a position to start running down Speilbergs out put mate. Its second to none.
mugsybalone
Some great films in there, but looking at that list, isn’t the most recent of those Munich, which was released around 2005? I honestly don’t have a problem with the guy or his work (Crystal Skull aside!), but I’m struggling to think of his recent successes.

War of the Worlds?
I loved it at the cinema, however, before you all jump on me I have to say, it was a very poorly attended afternoon screening and my gf at the time decided to give me a……dose of stress relief shall we say, in the back row, so I may be looking back through rose tinted glasses at that one.
But come on man give The Beard a break, cannon over the years has been amazing. Granted theres been some misfires along the way (1941, Hook, that sort of thing) but Id take his hit rate over anyone elses. Plus theres War Horse and Robocalypse to come, beside…..
In fact you know what?, why am i even arguing this? I’ve lost my point somewhere, this is a game site for heavens sake.
Sorry everyone, sorry, as you were.
mugsybalone
It’s cool, you liked War of the Worlds (granted, for reasons that might not have been to do with the film), I liked Hook :)

Im quite serious, look at that list you’ve printed, Over lots of it is over 20 years old
Then you look at his producing/directing credits for the last 10 years, they dont bode so well either, probably bar The Pacific that was decent
In the last 10 years hes directed, Catch me if you Can, The Terminal, War of the Worlds, IJ & Crystal Skull, Munich, Minority Report and maybe a couple more. That list is abysmal in comparison to the list you’ve got above, Munich excepted
He has, in the main, abandoned good films in favour of blockbusters, obviously Munich was a decent film and he may have a few more under his belt for the future too, War Horse and lincoln look like they could be excellent.
Im a Spielberg, I think hes capable of being one of the greatest directors of all time, but at this point in time I think he will be remembered as great director who made ever increasingly poor movies.
doug
Catch me if you can was a good film I thought. The terminal was ok worth a watch. War of the worlds was shite it should have been called war on Tom cruise. Minority report was good and is still a good movie to watch. I think neill blomkamp should take a go at halo I’m sure his name was mentioned after district 9
BrendanCalls
Yeah, I enjoyed District 9, was a much more valuable look at an alien invasion than Ive seen in a long time. Original idea properly thought through and decently executed.
BrendanCalls
meant to say im a Spielberg fan…I’m obviously not a Spielberg… well ..unless… Im just gonna go ask my mum ;-)
themanlikedave
I have to hold my hands up to you now. I was going to attempt to debunk your comment re given up ‘films’ for ‘block busters’, but having checked my dates on Wiki it seems you’re right and Im wrong.
I conceed the point to you Sir. Well played.
PS Can it REALLY be that long since Munich?
I thought Minority Report was pretty good for what its worth.
BrendanCalls
Its seem’s he trying to be much more eqwually balanced mow though, Lincoln and War Horse look and sound like they could be very good.
Hopefuully he’s turning a corner now and we see him at is best once more
doug
Let’s not forget A.I. (2001) or now that I think about it maybe we should
The Lone Steven
Hmm judging from the most recent film that i have seen that was produced and directed by him was IJATCS which was a pile of crap. (I foolishly ignore the warnings twitter and was brutally killed that day). I have very litte hope for Halo being a good film if the rumours are true as 90% VG films are a middle finger and a dump to the fans of the games.
At least the worst video game movie director ever is not involved.
