Meet the Reader: GTOWN

Yes, Ico has been good fun, and lovely to see it in 1080p.

Did you not play it the first time round?

I did, so I know the games inside out.

See I made a big profit on that. The first time it came out I convinced a guy on a market stall to get me a copy, and he managed to find me a limited edition with all the art cards in. Absolutely mint condition, and I paid him £20 for it.

He thought he was up on the deal, and once I’d played it I managed to sell it for £70 on eBay.

Gee-whizz! I remember seeing it go for £30 or £35 still, and that they’d gone past that a bit, but they’d settled down again.

Yeah, it was at a time when there was no news about the remakes. It was just a perfect storm for me.

Shadow of the Colossus has been wonderful to play too. I think it’s more enjoyable actually, just because the graphics are just that much better again.

Exactly, and yet, sort of the other way, last night I spent the best part of 2 hours beating my friends records on Burnout Crash.

Have you been enjoying that?

Well, yeah, it’s just a bit of arcade-y fun to kill a few hours.

I think people have been a bit quick to pre-judge it, and come into it with preconceived notions, because it’s got the Burnout name.

Yeah, it’s never claimed to be Burnout gameplay, it’s set out to just be an arcade game. A little bit of fun, and it’s a fantastic bit of fun.

Going back to disc based games, what have you been playing recently, outside of what we’ve just mentioned? Anything aside from BF3 and KZ3?

Not massively. I’m waiting on games to come out. Battlefield, Batman, and at the moment, because I use Boomerang for rentals, I’ve got Virtua Tennis 4 a moment. I’m quite enjoying that as well. The only thing with it is the dodgy online.

I’ve also got the HD remakes of God of War from the store again, so I’m playing them.

That’s it really, I’ve been concentrating more on Steam and PC bits and bobs.

Well, when you said you said there’s stuff you’re really looking forward to, and I’ve said this before, but it strikes me that this quarter could be the finest gaming quarter we’ve ever seen.

I think you’re right, and next year everyone’s going to be talking about the follow up to this generation. PS4, Xbox Next Gen or whatever they decide to call it, and this now won’t get any better in this console life.

I think the next 6 months, it’s just started with Deus Ex, Resistance 3 and so on and so forth, and I think we’re going to have just the most incredible 6 months. I think what’s lovely is that PSN and the digital download games from there and XBLA and Steam are coming into their own. For me, I think I ended up playing almost solely PSN games because I didn’t have time for anything else, for almost a whole year.

Dip in, dip out. I’m quite enjoying, from the PS+ deal, some of the minis they’re giving away. I’ve got them on my PSP, when I’m having some quiet time.

That’s lovely to know. I don’t have time for minis, they’re just not for me, and don’t have a PSP or do much mobile gaming. It’s good to know people get into them. What about, with what we’ve coming up, what are you looking forward most to?

Batman. I’m absolutely screaming for that. Uncharted 3, and the other game that escapes me again! See? This is where the old age sets it.

You can feel the brain halves rubbing together, but there’s no sparks!

Yeah, I know. Anyway, I’m really looking forward to Batman, and I’m purposefully not watching any of the trailers.

Now, you’ve got children, and have they been playing any games? Maybe the Mrs. too?

Claire, not so much, though she will occasionally join me for Little Big Planet 2, as and when that is on. We end up just in fits of laughter, not able to finish any levels, just because all the DS3s I give her are broken, though they’re fine when I use them!

[drop]

So she’s just completely cack handed?

Yeah, she’s just not really that interested.

We also got EyePet for the kids, but that was a bit of a let down for them. It’s got a bit better with the Move, but not as good as it could have been. I suppose it’s quite early tech, so probably for the next generation, but my kids are quite happy to just watch.

My daughter has a DS and will play anything on there. Joseph at the moment, we’re not sure what Father Christmas will bring him this year. We’re thinking possibly a DS or something. We’ll see.

Are you just going to steal it from your daughter?

Just colour it in black, or just write his name on it. It’s pink, but it’ll be fine!

What a way to try and influence him, as he’s growing up. Not that I’m implying pink consoles do anything like that.

He’s digging a hole!

That’s what you’ll be saying about your son one day! Right! Anyway, we have that delightfully awkward question, the Snog Civil Partnership and Smother options. We’ve got Peter, Lewis and Kris.

Oh, yes! Right, I think I would smother Peter, and then install TheLoneSteven in charge of TSA. Then I would get into a civil partnership with Lewis… No I wouldn’t, I would with Kris, so that he’d actually answer my bloody emails, because if he doesn’t I’ll just nag him when he gets home. Then I’d snog Lewis.

“Foods not on the table until you answer me.” That kind of thing?

Exactly! I’m not going to feed him any sausage until he answers my emails!

Oh dear! Yeah, OK. Then because you’re not getting any with Kris, Lewis is a bit of fun on the side?

Yeah, job done. Not one person has said they’d kill Peter and install TheLoneSteven as the editor and owner of the website.

The only thing is, though, everybody has been medically sound of mind, whereas you need one of the lovely jackets with the long sleeves. I love that you’ve taken the high risk move here.

Right then, we’ve done a handsome job. It’s a bit long, so I’ll either chop it up or play it back at a higher speed.

More things should be done like that.

The GTOWN and Mike data blast! GTOWN, Kitch, that was lovely. Thanks very much for coming on Meet the Reader.

Thank you very much indeed, and see you all very soon.

Thanks to Kitch for agreeing to do the interview, and thanks to you for reading this stream of drivel from the two of them!

  1. If you download the file and play it back at half speed, or so, Mike and Kitch sound like a pair of old drunks who’re sat on a sofa at 3AM just having a very slovenly chat about stuff…

Then you speed it up again, and realise they’re going like the clappers.

  2. I still melt at the sound of your voice, bunimo. Why don’t you do TV voice work!?

    • Funnily enough one of my clients (I’m a graphic designer by trade) wants me to do the voice-overs for some ads on one of the back-water channels on Sky (and Freesat).

I’m still smiling and feeling a touch “wow” at your kind words but it never ceases to make me smile when someone says something so kind. Cheers, fella. :)

      • I remember that podcast you were on and yeh I totally agree, very calm and sophisticated indeed.

      • Wow. Thanks, Jim! *is a little speechless*

  3. Nice to meet you GTOWN! and bunimo.. Get back on the podcast!

  4. very funny to listen :L Nice to meet you GTOWN. I always think Bunimomike sounds like Jarvis (used to play rugby for Wales, the guy with the afro) or a rugby player at least.

    • Well it’s nice to be part of something so special.

  5. awesome to listen to another meet the reader! =D
and bunimo, have u sent that recordings with u reading bedtime stories yet? cause i have trouble sleeping now when its getting darker and darker outside and its a little bit scary now…

and nice to meet u GTOWN (Kitch)! =D awesome job guys… *thumbs up*

    • And another lovely comment. I’m stiff at the thought of all this love.

      • Stiff!? Too much information… :P

    • I did, fella. Came 2nd (runner-up) too so won £100 Amazon gift voucher. Maybe I should offer a premium-rate bedtime storey service over Skype. For when you can’t sleep or don’t want to. ;-)

Interviewing Kitch was a pleasure and I know we could’ve chatted into the small hours of the morning but tef’s poor fingers would’ve been worn to the bone transcribing everything.

      • I pleasured Mike during the interview. That’s on Redtube though.

      • Bedtime voice is mine please! Kaythanksbyeee

  6. I feel your pain of working in said supermarket for I too suffer the same daily slog.

    • Tesco are the ultimate. But it pays for my gaming habits.

      • Do you have the pleasure of a Customer Cafe for that is where I dwell and run the joint. The shame.

      • Our Cafe has been rented out to Avenance. We have nothing to do with it.

  7. And I managed to get a swear word on the front page. Read the 1st letter of each of my replies. I’m so childish. ;)

    • Awesome! I do this way too often! Also, when I transfer money to my friends accounts I write down the reference as some sort of sex toy just so their bank statements are childishly rude.

  8. Another great meet the reader, what a nice community we have. Hello Kitch! It was wonderful to hear from you, hope your having a good weekend.

    • My weekend is fab so far. Just got back from a walk with the kids. Only 5 mile but good all the same.

  9. always read your name as GT OWN :p
can’t see your face on the photo in this post, but I’m pretty sure I already saw it full on the forums, no?

    • I’m a stunner. That all you need to know.

  10. Thoroughly enjoyed the interview guys, great to meet you Kitch!
