Steam users will find a message from Gabe Newell when they next sign into the service.
“Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6,” begins the message. “We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.”
It appears intruders got access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. The database contained “user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information.”
Valve claim that whilst they don’t have any evidence that the card numbers or personal information were taken, they are “still investigating” and suggest you “watch your credit card activity and statements closely.”
All Steam forum users will have to change their passwords the next time they log in. “If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well,” advises the message.
We remind all users to ensure passwords are unique for every site and service.

I used Steam once on my Mac, PSN and now this. Why hackers, why?! :@

Nerver bought anything on steam so i’m OK. I guess this is as big as the Sony hack?

Will people be demanding free games as compensation!

there’s a reason i don’t like to put any card details online.
they all say they’re secure and protected, but you can never be sure.
it’s scary to think, somebody could rob you from the other side of the world.
so these hackers are thieves and cowards.
that’s why i’d go with a top up card if that’s an option.
like the psn store cards or a live points card.
i only used steam for the free games and for one game boxed game, that i didn’t know used steam.
mind you there are those single use cards you can get aren’t there.
they’re always an option for place that don’t have any kind of store card.

Man… that sucks! This is turning out to be the year of the hacks.

What’s the significance of the Steam forum part of this story? If I never used the forum, did the hackers get my information?

Reading, it’s awesome. You should try it. ;)

I read the article thanks, then I read Sympozium’s comment about signing into the forums and wondered whether they only got the info of people who use the forums, which I don’t. Maybe I should have done a reply to Synpozium, I blame my iPhone.

Oh for ruck sake! STOP HACKING EVERYTHING IN RUCKING SIGHT! I’ve changed my password even just in case even though i don’t use the forums on Steam.

Oh dear, while feeling bad for all Steam members, had to have a laugh about poor fat Gabe (I hate PS3) Newell.
And yes, how is this any better than the Sony PSN problem???

Not really, hackers will hack it’s how your systems & people respond
Sony lied saying there was maintenance
Sony’s initial statements were initially vague
Sony’s systems didn’t flag up thay potentially 100’s of GBs of data were being leached
There is the feeling that Sony’s security was little more than ‘hope’
I’m mobile so haven’t seen what Valve have said or anything about their systems & processes & how it compares to Sony’s but they need to be brought to account if anything was less than textbook, especially as they should have had a review in-light of Sony’s breach.
