The psychology of fear is fascinating. Just why do many of us enjoy being scared out of our wits? The increased heart rate and ensuing rush of adrenaline give us a rush that many find enjoyable. Of course, many people have a much more reasonable reaction and avoid that sensation at all costs, as we – evolutionarily speaking – should do.
But, luckily for EA and Visceral Games, many people love the sensation of fear and the rush that follows it. Dead Space was a slight surprise back in 2008 when it first appeared on player’s consoles. It took the well known features of survival horror and the kind of visual stylings made famous by the Alien series of films and married them in such a compelling, imaginative and thoughtful way. Dead Space was always working hard, often in ways that weren’t immediately apparent, to keep the player on edge.
Dead Space 2 lost a little of the innovation that featured in the first game but still managed to deliver an incomparable experience in the big budget survival horror genre. The second main game in the series also introduced well-respected multiplayer which, while obviously incapable of rivalling the big FPS titles for numbers of players, nevertheless fostered a healthy community of players.
Dead Space 3 is another game that we don’t know an awful lot about. Judging from leaks uncovered by Siliconera, it sounds like Dead Space 3 will substitute the previous dark, grimy interiors for bright snowscapes. Rather than return to the claustrophobic orbiting spaces of the series’ previous outings, leaked information hints that this third iteration will take place on an icy planet called Tau Volantis. Isaac has crashed and must find his way through the wintery conditions to reunite with a familiar face and continue efforts to get off the planet.
Of course, with a new setting, we should be getting new enemy types too. This has not been detailed yet but, again, leaks suggest that there will be some kind of hive mind at work and enemies will no doubt reflect this.
Dead Space 3 has yet to even be confirmed for any specific platforms but with the fourth quarter of 2012 starting a full twenty months after the release of Dead Space 3 – and in prime selling season – it is reasonable to assume that EA and Visceral will at least aim for that kind of release window.

Must get around to finishing Dead Space- a great game, I got distracted when I picked up Drake’s Fortune and haven’t really gone back since. I think I’m near the end though.
I refuse to move into the second or third game in the series without beating the first!

the first is soo slow, but in a good way. its hard to go back to that sort of game after playing a faster paced game… I know

Especially the later levels when you’ve forgotten how to play and get your ass handed to you repeatedly. :(

think i need to pull my finger out and purchase the first one at least. But with a back log as long as my leg as it is not sure how I’d find time for it although i have really been getting into survival horror over the past year or so this does seen my new cup of tea
