Microsoft Points to be Discontinued?

An Inside Mobile Apps report (via GI Biz) is claiming that Microsoft is set to do away with its Microsoft Points system, instead bringing in real-world currency. Apparently developers with upcoming downloadable games are being briefed about the change.

As it stands you can only buy Microsoft Points in set amounts, meaning there is normally an over-spend when it comes to purchasing Xbox LIVE content.

Personally I would welcome a change like this!

  1. Good news for xbox gamers I think, I never understood the point of points to buy games, its confusing to some.

  2. I believe this is to combat the hackers that have created serial no. generators that you find on the pre-paid points cards. As those gens can give you a valid number, then the card that has the same number can sit on the shelves for a long time before ever being redeemed (not that it would work).

I only buy points for the map packs, but since the hacking thing I wont be paying by card….

  3. Surprised lots of people saying this is good news, which is odd when you look how much cheaper games are to buy on XBLA than they are on PSN, yes I’m sure there’s a couple which prove otherwise, but generally XBLA is a massively cheaper.

    • It’s good news for Microsoft and Xbox users, bad news for Sony.
Although this might cause enough pressure to actually make prices equal, so could end up as good news for everyone.

      • It’s good new for Xbox users if prices aren’t capped by points bandings and go up to PSN levels?

      • Oooh, fair point.
I’d assumed they’d keep them at current levels.
Could be dodgy for them then.

  4. I think it’s a good move- transparency is good, plus XBLA can properly show that they are cheaper by comparing € to € instead of points to €.

I am surprised it’s happening mid-generation though. Maybe for the launch of Terry? :P

    • Why Terry? is others named Billy? hope so thats better

  5. well that will make it inline with psn

  6. I wonder what 800MSP will be converted to on the store. I’m going to guess £6.99

  7. Good news to hear, will make it easier to compare with PSN and Steam prices at the very least.

  8. no way I’m putting my card on there.
