1GB Battlefield 3 ‘Patch’ Goes Live, With Server Renting

Anyone on the team with any kind of remotely passing interest in Battlefield 3 is either sat out in the sun having a cheeky cider or they’re hiding.  I’m trying to feign interest in all this, but instead ended up feeling a bit miffed that everyone’s calling this thing a patch.  A GIGABYTE patch.

I remember when all this was just fields, etc.

Anyway, whatever, Battlefield 3 (the game were you stab a rat and then a bit later sit in the back of a fast airplane and go oooooh at the clouds) has got a big fat update, which apparently contains “more tweaks, fixes, and additions than you can shake a stick at” and gets your whites whiter than white.

Things that mean almost nothing to me in no particular order: a 5-flag Conquest Assault variant for PS3 on Wake Island, the ability to rent your own server (£1.19 a day or £20 for a month) and a big pile of shortcut items that cost money but remove the need to actually play the game.

I love this generation.

  1. 1 bloddy effing gigabyte…. I only have around 6Gb left in my PS3. Bloody freebies from Plus and other games already installed to be played soon.
Well shame I’ll miss BF3 Friday night Meet but I’ll have a bash at it when I get back from the cinemas. I hope a few TSA are still about online lol.

    • I probably still will be. Maybe yogh too.

      • Awesome-sauce I should be back around midnight depending how long the movie Hunger Games is. (We booked it at 9:30pm)

      • hopefully i’ll be able to come along to that, missed the last few weeks since my controllers been broken.

      • Good stuff – Hopefully see you then.

Controller broken eh? Bad times. Dark Souls? WipeOut maybe? :)

  2. To be fair this actually seems to be a great patch, lots of small changes that should improve online play a lot.

I think this is the first time you have been able to rent a server on console, I know it is very popular on PC.

  3. Reads like the evil-twin of an Apple post.

Regarding the patch though, the size is ridiculous, but there is a ridiculous change list to quantify it. Now I just need it to release on PC.

Love them or hate them, at least DICE are consistent.

    • Apologies, it wasn’t meant to sound so arsey.

      • It’s not fun being inside on a day like this is it? :P

      • No it’s fair enough really, we shouldn’t really be getting, or more to the point needing, patches of this size.

  4. Thats the reason I read TSA daily. Your game news mixed with a blend of wit/sarcasm and honesty.

My PS3 HDD wont hold this patch, its already full. Im either going to have to delete some of my PSN games or stop playing BF3.
Seeing as though im enjoying Sam and Max too much at the moment, it will be the latter.

  5. Awesome news!!!!!

  6. I don’t think I’ve got 1Gb of space left on my hard drive.

  7. having to redownload back to karkland now after the update, was wondering did the update erase my original back to karkland pack or do i have to that manually ? didnt think to check before i started downloading.

  8. 1GB?! For all platforms (PS3/360/PC)?

    • Ah, followed the link, PS3.

  9. Think I played this for about an hour on day 1 and haven’t touched it since! Always Think about playing it, but always get round to something else.

    • The MP takes a good few hours to get into but once you do, its un-rivalled by any other FPS Shooter out there in my opinion

  10. so now you can rent servers, from ea.
the company who’s servers are pretty much an industry joke?

    • To be fair, i am struggling to think of a single issue with the BF3 servers (that i have encountered anyway – Many have told me about random disconnects & so forth).

Oh wait, there was this one time where we spawned with the start off weapons only, but that was resolved by simply leaving & re-entering.

That said, it’ll probably be DICE servers rather than EA (as some are even labelled as such), although i could be wrong.

      • that used to happen in bc2 as well, think its caused by server maintenance.

    • don’t know how there doing it for console but on the pc side its independent server rental sites that pay ea/dice a small amout of the profits or you create your own with a spare pc.
