Japanese 3DS Sales Boosted By Kid Icarus

Last week’s Japanese 3DS sales jumped by around 40 per cent, thanks in part to the release of first party title Kid Icarus.

There were also a couple of new hardware bundles featuring Monster Hunter Tri-G and Super Mario Land 3D which took the previous week’s sales of just over 64,000 to a figure just over 94,000.

The 3DS was the highest selling hardware in Japan last week, hugely outstripping the PS3 in second place with just under 26,000 units sold and the PSP in third place, which sold just under 20,000.

The PlayStation Vita’s lacklustre performance continued to plateau at just over 10,000 units sold.

The Xbox 360 is all but dead in Japan now, with many retailers not even stocking it anymore. It managed just 1,084 units in the week ending 25th March.

  1. It was funny how only 1 site last week said –

‘SONY has sold over ‘8 Million’ PS3’s in Japan now so far’

But sites love to bang on about the 3DS is beating the PS3 every week in Japan(+ i can’t see why they stick home consoles & handhelds in the same chart anyway really) + People say the Japanese hate American products & American companies whenever people say ‘The Xbox 360 sales are dreadful in Japan’ But the Japanese LOVE the iPhone? ? ? Isn’t that an American product & Apple are an American company? ? ? LoL:D I will say it anyway –
Well done SONY for getting 8 Million PS3’s sold in Japan:P

    • I’m with you. I don’t pay much attention to the charts anyway, especially from other countries. I will buy consoles / handhelds that I want to game on and I’ll enjoy it

    • I think you assume the worst of this, the comparison with the PS3 and PSP isn’t there as some kind of like-for-like measure, it’s to show that selling almost four times the next best selling game hardware (whatever that may be) is a big deal.

The comparison with the PSVita, which I purposefully avoided because I’m personally really hopeful for the Vita, is much more relevant and much more disastrous. Sony’s most direct competitor outsold it by a factor of ~9:1. The good news for Sony, if we’re spinning sales figures, is that the PS3 outsold its most direct competitor by a factor of ~25:1. The moral of this statistical folly? It’s not really all that important who beats who and what the exact numbers are week-to-week.

Yeah, the PS3 is doing really well all over the world now and 8million sold in Japan is good for them but this is news because almost 100,000 units in Japan, in a week is quite significant, not because it’s the 3DS or because we hate Sony (an accusation that is, frankly, profoundly stupid, although I know you’re not really saying that directly).

  2. Nice, vita, speaking of vital who won the competition peeps?
