Author Suing Ubisoft Over Assassin’s Creed Copyright Claim

Ubisoft is being sued by author John L Beiswenger, who claims the Assassin’s Creed franchise has a lot of similarities to his book, Link.

Link was published in 2003 and explores the possibility of accessing memories of people’s ancestors through science. These memories can also be relived. You’ll notice that this is what Desmond is doing through the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Link also makes some references to assassinations, as well as religious and spiritual themes.

Beiswenger is suing Ubisoft for a minimum of $1.05 million, though this could rise to $5.25 million if the ruling judge believes that Ubisoft did infringe the copyright. Beiswenger also wants Assassin’s Creed III and other future related franchise merchandise to be prevented from being sold.

  1. I’ve never really like the copyright laws. This doesn’t really change my mind about them either..

  2. Good on the guy, without reading any of his work it sounds pretty much the same. Happened in a similar case for my dad (we believe).

    • nothing to do with gaming that is, again a book.

  3. If he won this and got the next game blocked there would suddenly be alot of hate going around for this guy. Also it doesnt seem like he is asking for very much, i would guess ubisoft have made alot more than 5 million off AC

  4. Hmm, it doesn’t do him any favours by suing them now as most people will see him as a money grabber.

If it turns out that the AC franchise was a massive rippoff from a book, i think Ubi will be screwed.

I’ve not read his book so i can’t tell if he’s right or wrong.

Hang on, wouldn’t this have been noticed a few years back by him or his publisher when Ubi released AC1?

  5. Coincidence surely O_o
