Ever since Microsoft popularised the achievement system with the Xbox 360, reward-based gaming has become a big thing.
Nintendo, by comparison, has largely refused to embrace such a system in the past, with the closest application of such a system with ‘Accomplishments’ on the 3DS hardware.
Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime has confirmed that hardware specific achievements will return for the Wii U, but what of a fully fledged cross-game achievement system?
“Once you start getting into game-specific [Achievements] that’s developer driven.”

Right, so the achievements reported to be n ZombiU are in-game only then. Ah well.
There’s a lot of trophy talk going on at the moment :P

I’m a sucker for trophies but I enjoy a game more if it is lacking trophies – however like the Velocity scenario, I wouldn’t buy a game without trophies as I feel like my time spent on a game is rightfully reflected by an amass of trophies. Catch-22. You either include a trophy system and take away from the experience or remove it and take away from the competitive nature/comparability of trophies.

What a nice idea. It’s the future!

He doesn’t mention what their philosophy is though, just what it isn’t.Philosophy doesn’t really work that like does it?

Nihilsm maybe?

Details have started to appear regarding UwhatMario.Apparently Mario realizes early on that peach will inevitably keep getting kidnapped so he boots up Cod and orders a curry.

Fumbled words,was late,apologies.

Nintendo are making mistakes again.

I’d be fine with this approach.
Achievements and trophies are nice to aim for but comparing trophies with other people is ultimately pointless due to some games being much easier to 100% than others. If Nintendo leave it open and implement achievements in games that call for them, I can see that working out much better.
Ideally I would love, for example, a list of objectives to complete in ZombiU and doing so awards me an item for my Mii or something like that. Just something to squeeze some extra longevity out of my games and reward my progress.

I no you love Nintendo but they are behind everybody the online system will be if the developer wants to implement it as well.
trophies/achievements are very popular if you like them or not the Zombie u ones are pointless they need to do a full blown system.

Sorry, I’m not personally convinced. I love earning achievements/trophies but only for personal satisfaction. Not once have I ever looked on someone else’s list and said “haha, I have more achievements than you!”. The fact that some games are much, much easier to finish than others renders the whole comparison aspect pointless.
skibadee
do not think anyone does that why would you go haha I have more trophies than you sounds childish.
you seem to not get them you compare to look at what games people have to see if they have earned the same trophies, maybe ask for advice on how to get it if having trouble getting a specific one.
they are for personal achievement not for boasting.
skibadee
& add a lot more to games I have got my moneys worth way more out of games than I used to.
I will try the very hard difficulty’s never used to bother before games are better for having trophies/achievements imo.

I think once again Nintendo are ignoring the movements made by other games companies despite such advancements generally being considered a positive step. I like the added ‘levelling up’ that achievements/trophies provide, whether they’re an accurate way to compare yourself against someone else or not.
I wish that when someone makes a genuine improvement to the way a game/system works it could be implemented by everyone else – I’ve been playing the first Uncharted and love that when I go to the ‘save’ option it tells me it’s saved the game less than a minute ago. Such incremental improvements probably mean very little on their own but if they were are used as a basis by every company then we could all benefit from them, rather than be aware of what we’re missing from a company’s output.

If Nintendo are serious about attracting the hardcore gamers then they need to get of their pride and realise that achievements/trophies are a part of gaming now. Some people will buy games depending on the trophies and even if it has a platinum trophy. For me, trophies and achievements can give real replay value to a game in trying to get all of them.

mte on your last sentence.
when i go for a plat, having to achieve all those other trophies…i experience parts of the game i may not have experienced just by playing it casually.
personally i wouldn’t play a game say like uncharted 2 more than once without trophies. i’ve played and and seen the story already.
but if i’m going for the plat you have to play it 2-3 times, having to use different weapons, kill enemies in different ways and you see things in your surroundings or the dialogue you may not have noticed the first time round.
gaming is a hobby, and i think trophy hunting is just an extension of that. and some people are more into it then others. i wouldn’t play a game like hannah montana or any games like that, that i wouldn’t play normally just for a plat.
also, when someone on psn send me a friends request i look at their trophies to see what kind of games they have, if we don’t play similar games i’m less likely to add them.
