PS3 Super Slim (CECH-4000) Concept Shows Top Loading Design

An artist's impression.
This image, courtesy of ‘Graphics Horse’ over on GAF, is part of a series of mock-ups of what the new ‘super slim‘ PS3 might look like, using the label positioning artwork as a basis.

To be fair, they actually look hugely convincing, especially given that the latest firmware (or, at least, 4.20) indicated that we might be seeing a new disk loading method.

The base section matches the FCC filing, and the notches in the black and white PDF sit where the LEDs are in the mock-up, so everything that’s in the design doc is at least copied over to these concept illustrations by the artist.

You can see the whole set here on GAF.

Urgh no way would I buy that. Unless it played PS2 discs, then I would yes, but I wouldn’t trade my current slim for it.

Its not exactly meant for people to trade in their current PS3′s for one of these. It is going to release (if true) because it will cost less to make, and appeals more to newer consumers who have yet to purchase a PS3 (it refreshes the brand).

Also, if you really want to play PS2 games, buy a freakin’ PS2 for less than £20 from Cash Converters. I just don’t see the absolute need to play PS2 games on a PS3. That’s just my opinion of course, as is your opinion is yours. But I really just don’t know why people are still wanting a PS3 to play PS2 games. Is it convenient? Yes. Is it logical? F*** No. For obvious reasons.

Agreed, most of the popular PS2 games are being re-released in remastered HD trilogy/collection sets these days with trophies to-boot, and any games that aren’t, I can still boot my PS2 whenever I want to play them.
Backward compatibility was a novelty during the early days (although most people probably still had their PS2′s anyway :P), but I personally think that it is totally unneccessary now, and we need to move on.

Though I’m a fan of lessening the clutter in my living room and having one machine that also plays the big library of old games I have, I very much doubt this “super slim” or whatever it ends up being called will play ps2 games given that they are now beginning to trickle onto the psn as downloads.

My current slim PS3 is a pretty tight fit against the underside of my TV cabinet, no room for a topload in there. Good really cos it might help my ailing wallet.

Unless it’s ultra quiet (My PS3 is heavily used for Blu-Ray’s & Netflix) I wouldn’t bother.
Plus I hate top loading designs as the lens is usually exposed for some grubby 5 year old’s fingers to attack.

Yes, i thought that too, the top part looks wrong – too big for the bottom section. Also the usb ports would be even trickier to get at.

Hope its £150. My PS3 60GB already died once and my 80GB’s fan speed is increasing every year on XMB.
I dont think the new PS3 will have a inbuilt power supply.

I’m inclined to agree with you there about the power supply.

      Yup, I’d have a fancy open top PS3 with a PS3 lid-styled coaster.

I hope it’s not like the old PSOne. If you open it too early it will spin out and try and decapitate you.

I think price is key here – if it’s right then this would be very attractive, figuratively speaking. As for top-loading, this is one less thing to go wrong in my opinion – no motor’s required as with the Fat & Slim disc loading/ejecting.
If I can pick one up with a small HDD (since I’ll stick a 500GB in anyway) for around £120 then I’m in. To be fair, my PS3 could look like a bucket, so long as it produces the goods on-screen.

    Ewww.

Why do they keep harking back to this top-loading malarkey? It got old with the PSone. I’m guessing it’s to do with reduced costs for the fangly janglies that make the discs go in & out as they currently do, but i actually find that quite a selling feature.

It’s like elves live inside & take your disc from you (when you insert it far enough in for them to grab it of course!) to play it & then give it back to you once you are done. They make a lot of groaning noises of course (that just sound like the mechanics of the system to the untrained ear), but that just lets me know that they are still alive in there. We all moan about our jobs, don’t we?

I wouldn’t want to get rid of my elves.

What do you think they’re doing when you’re running that blow-cleaning procedure?

They are having the time of their lives.

They can do a bit of kite flying, paragliding whatever they feel like really. I’m not a monster.

That’s actually quite small, if it’s drawn to scale.

    It’s about 2 discs long and a bit over 1 & a half wide.

It’d be teeny weeny but Sony’s product designers are pretty adept so hopefully it’ll look better than something that wouldn’t be out of place on the Death Star’s surface.

The circle doesn’t necessarily need to be the disc size. Imagine if a Blu-ray was a Mini CD.

        True.

Although I don’t know why it’d be much bigger- they’re not likely to bring out a Blu-Ray XL, are they?

Having looked at PS3 boards and compared to the boards SONY use in their professional video camera range (think TV/Film) (I work for SONY) there is a massive amount of reduction that can be achieved. PS3 boards are mostly unused space. Space costs money, so there is a lot to be saved in a PS3. Most of the room in a PS3 is taken up by power supply and storage (HDD), and optical drive. If this has an external drive and a solid state storage then I can easily see this being the correct size.
