Pitchford Clarifies: Gearbox Waiting On Sony To Approve Borderlands Vita

It sounds like the situation with Borderlands 2 on Vita is more complicated than it first seemed.

Last week, we brought you news that Gearbox would love to see a Vita version of Borderlands 2, but weren’t able to develop it in house – speaking at Rezzed, studio head Randy Pitchford called on Sony to get involved with the porting process. PSU followed up with Pitchford at an event for the game this week, where he revealed that three (unspecified) teams have approached the studio about the project since that appeal.

There are no direct quotes in PSU’s piece, but it sounds like Gearbox need Sony to approve the port, and oversee the porting process in some way, but that they are still waiting to hear back from the company. Pitchford comments that he would have liked to have seen Borderlands 2 Vita at Sony’s E3 press conference, suggesting that attempts to get the port off the ground have been going on for some time with no success.

Whether Gearbox eventually manages to bring Sony round to the idea, Pitchford was apparently clear to state that despite the enquiries of the aforementioned mystery studios, no actual work on a Vita version of Borderlands 2 is yet underway.

Come on Sony.

  1. Oh dear God Sony, please, please, please do this.

Borderlands is a pick-up-and-play shooter which can also be played in long bursts- it’s perfect both for commute play and sitting down with the console.

It’s a dream Vita game for many, including me.

  2. Aye would be brilliant if true but from the last story I thought he was joking.

But hey if he’s seriois bring it.

  3. Hang on I NEVER thought he meant a Vita version I thought he implied he just wanted sony yo get remote play working so you could play it on the vita…

  4. Damn it Sony, get your ass in GEARbox……

    …..geddit?

  5. Again, none screws Sony like Sony themselves. Period. This is ridiculous, you have a portable that’s supposed to be a “PS3 on your pocket”. With the chance to have some cross play between them (sync the save and keep playing on the bus, then back home), is this the best Sony can do to get more games to their handheld?

  6. This reeeaally sounds like incompetence. :l

  7. Would signing a petition help?

  8. lol at Gearbox offloading it onto Sony.

All he’s saying is he wants a port of his game done – yet he’s probably not interested himself. Talk about wanting something and then Sony getting the stick. :)

    • Not really, Gearbox are already working on Borderlands, Alien and another (I think). It’s beneficial for both sides to have it on the Vita, especially so for Sony as it will be the only mobile version of the game…so I’d say they’d both be interested in doing it. The question is, is whether Sony have any remaining studios not working on important projects to actually port it!

  9. Borderlands 2 on the Vita could be a real system seller, which means Sony will try everything to not get it on the Vita…

  10. If Sony and Gearbox manage to get it on Vita, I’m just hoping it’ll be released before Christmas.
