Sony Talks PlayStation Plus, And Plans For The Future

[drop2]PlayStation Plus has gone from something that only the core PlayStation fan was interested in to being widely regarded as next-to essential for almost everyone.

That change happened at E3, when the platform holder introduced the Instant Game Collection, and has continued to live up to that promise of high quality entertainment bundled in with the subscription cost, even after Ross McGrath, the service’s driving force in Europe, moved on.

Speaking to GI, John Koller, VP of PlayStation Home and Handheld Consoles over in the States, says that this momentum is likely to follow forward. “PlayStation Plus is fantastic,” he says, rather predictably. “This is going to be a significant part of our marketing efforts over the next 6, 12, 24 months. This is a big part of what we do.”

He talks about the value of the Instant Game Collection, and how it’s especially good for late adopters, those coming in six or seven years after the console launched. “This is going to be a very important part of what we do here over the next few months,” he adds. “You’ll see it at holiday. You’ll see it even beyond that with various integrations into our ecosystem.”

That last phrase is interesting – “various integrations into our ecosystem” – quite how they’re going to get Plus into other aspects of the brand is somewhat tempting to speculate on. Will Plus subscribers get even more for their money, or will non-Plussers start to lose out?

Customer satisfaction is apparently at the highest ever levels (at 97 percent) whilst the rate of people renewing is at 93 percent, according to the article. “The success of PS Plus is contributing in a big way to driving overall PSN sales,” said a spokesperson, “as our last quarter was the biggest in terms of transactional sales in PSN’s six-year history.”

  1. I dont’ play enough to warrant buying ps+ but I have admit, after being against if for a while, the advantages of having are definitely much better than they were.

Would rather have free online gaming any day though, as long as that stays, I’m happy.

  2. PS+ is great, day one subsciber and it has come on leaps and bounds since the dark days.
I think that Vita Playstation plus should be sold as a seperate subscription, obviously with a price tag lowered to reflect available content, that way PS3 only people wouldn’t see their plus content diluted and Vita only owners wont feel ripped off by paying the full current subscription for a morsel of content.

  3. plus is graet and all but it’s pointless for me as i buy a shit ton of games. Still subbed though.

  4. The only emails I get off Playstation is “thank you for your purchase” and “funds have been added to your wallet”.I must have one of them faces.:)

    • At least you aren’t getting the ones that say “stop bothering my daughter”.

    • That is also all the e-mail I get from Sony.

  5. happy day 1 Plus subscriber,

  6. I think plus is excellent value for money. In fact I think all that’s missing is an icon on the XMB to encourage more people to sign up!

  7. I’m interested to know how Mr Koller knows that I’ll see PS+ on holiday. I’m flying out on Monday so I’m rather worried that he knows a little too much about me.
Nice to know that it’ll still be available after holiday though because I’m only going for a week. Cheers Sony!

  8. I really hope they don’t drive away non-plus’ers like myself, I can’t really see myself ever subscribing until serious changes are made.

    • I’d settle for a reduced price package of nothing more than cloud storage & auto updates.

& maybe the odd discount from the store.

  9. Im an ex-Plusser. It represents value for money if you’re a casual gamer and dont buy many, but most of the games on offer Ive had for ages. Hands up who had Red Dead Redemption already? As for the “new” games, the selection has been so poor that I just couldnt justify wasting the money. Scott Pilgrim?!??! Really?!?!?

  10. I very satisfied with the Plus Instant Game Collection.
As a owner of a Vita system I hope Vita+ will equally good for the vita.
