And today it’s the turn of PSM3 magazine, Future’s print mag that will see its latest issue on the shelves shortly as the publisher moves to reduce the number of magazines and focus on its formidable online portfolio.
It’s going out with a bang, though, as GameFront.de reports the latest issue is primed with a big pile of PlayStation 4 rumours.
The first one being that it’s not going to be called the PlayStation 4, due to the number 4’s superstitious connotations in Japan. 4 is considered unlucky, and has an alternative pronunciation related to death.
Other aspects from the report say that the rumoured 4K resolution won’t be for games, just for movies. Good, if the next gen aims for 1080p at a decent frame rate that’ll be absolutely fine.
What else is in there? Sony will show demos at E3 next year, they’ll look like Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1313 did on PC this year, and everyone will be rather excited. Except those that like used games, because the rumour is that games will be registered with a PSN account and it won’t be easy to play pre-owned titles. Remember this is just speculation, there’s no confirmation that any of this will actually happen.
Onwards? How about between 4GB and 8GB of RAM? No backwards compatibility with PS3 and PS2, oddly, although that’s likely to be covered by the Gaikai deal as we’ve said in the past. The mag points to Move being important (and possibly bundled) although that’s again just guesswork and most likely not going to end up the case.
The price? 400€-500€. We’ll see.
The PS4 – or whatever it’ll end up being called – is heavily rumoured to be coming next year. We’ve written plenty about it, including this discussion piece which picks up on most of the consolidated chat and technical guesswork.

Don’t expect PS4 to have 16GB, let alone 8GB of RAM.
PS1 had 2MB of RAM
PS2 had 16 times as much with 32MB RAM
PS3 had 8 times as much with 256MB RAM
PS4 – 4 times as much with 1GB? Personally, I think 2 – 4GB.
I also expect (and hope) that the issue of backwards compatibility with PS3, PSN, PSM and PS2 and 1 classics will be handled by a streaming service.
The BC outcry every bloody time is ridiculous. As someone pointed out, I never expected this in the past, and I don’t want to increase the unit cost for a feature I’ll rarely want to use. I want the next generation to provide new games, with the option of supporting previous generation games for those that want to pay for it.

By not including BC, they risk having low sales for the PS4 at launch as many gamers plan to trade in their PS3 and keep their PS3 collection as chances are there will be a small amount of games at launch. Hopefully, it has 8GB of RAM thus both platforms should have excellent ports of games instead of one platform having a decent version.
And i see they’ve declared war on Preowned games. Yeah, that’s going to backfire as preowned helps to sell new games due to gamers trading in last year’s version in order to help with the cost or just don’t want that version of the game anymore. And having PSN registering the game is a massive eff you to gamers who don’t have net access. And knowing SCEE, it will be a game of chance every time you buy a new game as i can see them cocking up thus locking you out of the game that you pay full price for. Or deciding to have maintance on the day of launch for a game. Plus it would drive some over to Ninty and MS so it’s not in Sony’s best interest to lock out Preowned games.
If they do sell it for 400-500 euros, it will end up doing badly as it will be a repeat of the PS3’s early life. 300-400 should be the maxium price range. As i can see MS selling the Xbox for that price.

“If they do sell it for 400-500 euros, it will end up doing badly as it will be a repeat of the PS3′s early life”
ps3s early life?? on a sonys business side of things it ended up doing pretty good lol 70 million consoles ATM isn’t it?
Sony won’t worry about day 1 sales but 10 year sales mate!
Declared war on pre owned – good! Although I don’t see what the fuss is about as the whole world is going a million miles an hour towards online downloads! As for pre owned helping new games sales, not for every consumer mate!
As for people gaming without an Internet connection…..that’s probalay the tiniest amount of consumers in there database! or then again it’s probalay the generation of under 5 yr olds who own ps3s but dont have broadband oO or the unemployed.

But there is a large majority of gamers who trade in games in order to help with the cost of new games as well as getting rid of games they no longer play/like. And unemployed people do have broadband for job hunting reasons.

As an aside, surely selling more PS’ in the late game is actually more profitable, since the units start costing significantly less as the ‘fixed’ components become cheaper. Selling masses of units in the early game must come at a crushing loss (especially when the PS3 sold at big loss in its infancy). Obviously I’m not in touch with economics of business but selling more later in the cycle must be more rewarding.

This article relates only some internet rumours and speculations based on new Sony’s patents. No credibility for most of these points, excpected which speak about hardware capacity.
