Game of the Year 2012 – Sports

Sports

Our Sports Game of the Year 2012 is FIFA 13 from EA. The annual sporting leviathan continues to make improvements that keep it ahead of all competitors. This year saw the customary inclusion of a wide range of real-world stadiums and officially licensed teams to take through a newly revamped career mode or various other game modes – online and off.

The game was one of the fastest, biggest sellers of the year. It was the first non Call of Duty game to break a million sales in its first week in the UK and sold 4.5 million copies around the world in only five days. EA has claimed it as the biggest sports videogame launch of all time. Quite an achievement.

Unfortunately, the Wii and Vita versions were barely reskinned re-releases of the previous year’s games on those platforms. None of the new features were present and only team rosters and slight presentational differences were notably different.

EA will be pleased to know that second place in our vote went to another of its releases – SSX. The rebooted snowboarding sim wasn’t so far behind its vastly more established stable-mate either. EA’s strong sporting presence continued with UFC Undisputed 3 and FIFA Street tying for third.

Here’s a chart showing our top five.

  1. Woav I expected Football Manager 2013 to be much higher, but I guess it’s to “hardcore”.

Pleased to see Everybody’s Golf in top 5, brilliant game for the Vita and cheap also.

    • Yep, I really enjoyed playing and platting Everybody’s Golf. One of the most replayable Vita games out there.

  2. Fifa 13 really deserves this as it’s excellent. The amount of game modes on offer is unreal, lots of really good ideas. It’s starting to do my nut a little though as it really does have quite a lot kf issues, some large some small but when all combined it can make for quite a frustrating experience.

    • Aye, Fifa 13 is a rather large beast, offering a bewildering number of game scenarios, most of which I will probably never touch. The core game is excellent, quick, crisp, fluid and lifelike, heck, Wolverhampton Wanderers are just as bad in FIFA13 as they are in real life”

  3. No love for PES :(

  4. Just have to be a bit nit picky. UFC Undisputed 3 was published by THQ.

    • I know, my point was that FIFA Street was from EA. Perhaps that sentence quotes those two games the wrong way around, I was tired by this point!

  5. PES 13 was really good, shame its not on the list.

  6. PES is better in my opinion but I’m really biased against fifa!

  7. Pretty much what I imagined. Couldn’t disagree more however.
