Ron Gilbert Leaves Double Fine

Acclaimed game designer Ron Gilbert has announced that he’s parted ways with Double Fine after the completion of The Cave. There doesn’t seem to be any tension between the two sides, with Gilbert thanking Double Fine for their work on The Cave in the announcement post on his blog. If you’re a fan of The Cave, we weren’t hugely impressed in our review of the game, then you’ll want to keep an eye on his blog, as Gilbert say he’ll be posting various pieces of behind the scenes content over the coming weeks; in fact he’s kicked things off with a complete map of The Cave.

If you’re not entirely familiar with Gilbert, then he’s best known for his work at LucasArts in the late 80s and early 90s, where he wrote games like Maniac Mansion and created the Monkey Island series. He also acted as a producer on Total Annihilation, my favourite real-time strategy title ever.

As well as the announcement of his departure from Double Fine, Gilbert’s announced the next project he’s working on, an iOS title called Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG. That’s pretty much as long as titles get. We don’t really know anything else about the game beyond the fact that Gilbert will be working on the game with Clayton Kauzlaric, his partner on DeathSpank. A pirate themed musical match three title sounds like it could be fun though.

  1. Things with very long titles always smack of “HEY! LOOK AT ME!” desperation.

    • It’s a fine line between that and amusing themselves I guess – and the iOS app will just have gibberish below it!

  2. Has he even been hired there? I thought he was just working there for The Cave, similarly to how Oueda is working on The Last Guardian.

    • That was my impression as well!

      • Yeah mine as well. But hey, internet decided he was working there so he is!

  3. I pretty much love everything this man touches. One of the greats.

  4. Would’ve had a sale from me if The Cave was co-op online. Still, best of luck to him. :-)
