Rumour: PS4 Advertising To Start During Champions League Final In May

Sony Europe will be starting their PlayStation 4 advertising campaign during the high profile Champions League final on the 25th of May. That’s according to PS4Daily, who say that the platform holder announced that they’d only advertise the PlayStation brand during the League.

Sony did something similar with the PlayStation 4 unveiling, showing those cryptic ads around the ground before the New York showing.

This is – according to the site – going to be a television advert, although it’s not clear what format the ad campaign will take. The site debates whether it’ll just be “Sponsored by PlayStation 4” idents, or actual 30 second adverts in the regular commercial breaks.

Sony’s budget for advertising the PlayStation 4 is reported to be around $100 million in the US alone, suggesting that the company is serious about getting the word out.

Adverts in May would point to a 2013 release for the console, in any case.

A quick call to SCEE’s PR department on the matter – there hasn’t been an official press release to suggest there’s any validity to PS4Daily’s report – provided a “no comment”.

  1. Advertising was an area in which the PS3 fell short imo, certainly in the UK anyway. Not sure if this is the answer though, who watches football?

    • Er, I’m pretty sure that MILLIONS of people will watch the Champions League final!

      • Yep, plus probably nearly everyone who owns a copy of FIFA.

      • And PES for non Playstation users.

      • Probably even Martians too if they are lucky enough to have cable.

      • they can run a cable to Mars now?
        wow, isn’t modern technology wonderful.

course, you also need the universes longest extension lead to run your tv there. ^_^

    • Is that a serious question or sarcastic but to answer it either way last year champions league was seen by 300 million people.

    • Guys, he was obviously joking.

      You were? Weren’t you?

      • Come on guys. That was dripping with sarcasm!

  2. Aggressive move on Sonys part to do a big advertising campaign right around the same time Microsoft is rumoured to announce the next Xbox.

  3. So, can we expect more info on the PS4 until then or will they just hint at things to come?

    • My guess is that they’ll reveal the actual console before, otherwise people might be confused if they’re advertising the ps4 but still not showing it?

      • That’s what I’m hoping for!
I’ll settle for a release date and price, though if I really have to. :P

      • If they are advertising the PS4, surely they need to reveal it to the world before, it wouldn’t make sense…unless they have some fantastic new way of revealing it on the day?

      • I’m thinking they might just hint at it and get the hype machine going. Getting the name out there might be their first marketing step.

  4. Pipe. And. Smoke. It.

  5. Sony has paid UEFA to change the Champions League trophy into the shape of the PS4, it’s going to be the first time the looks of the box is shown :P

    • The Champions League trophy IS a PlayStation 4.

  6. Keep it up Sony, its going to pay off. Will this be just before or after Microsofts suppose reveal of the next xbox?

Either way its a good way of taken some of the attention off of that.

  7. i have bad memories of playstation advertising and football.

the “this is living” campaign, with the guy jerking off into a sock while watching a match.

seriously, who thought that was a good idea?

anyway, if they want to reach a very wide audience, that’s a good place to do it.

    • I remember that. Burst out laughing the first time I ever watched it. So fucking weird.

Also the advert of the rather chesty girl sitting on the toilet in just a bikini. Some of their advertisers really were on shrooms, or some Heisenberg style meth.

  8. Nothing like advertising the PS4 when Real Madrid hold the CL trophy.

  9. Soon as i know the price of the PS4 and proper official bundles become available to pre-order,i’ll pre order.
Then I’ll hope we don’t have to fork out too much for social features and gaikai remote play on Vita.
