PS3 Firmware Update 4.50 Detailed, Expands Certain Plus Benefits To All

The PS3 will be getting a firmware update in the next few hours, with previous Plus exclusive features being made available to all PSN members. Firmware update 4.50 will include the following features.

  • All system software updates will be automatically downloaded.
  • Purchases made on the Web Store will also be automatically downloaded when the system turns on.
  • Trophy visibility can be changed in the privacy settings, with the option to hide certain titles.
  • The transfer of data between the PS3 and Vita can be carried out over Wifi, and ethernet connections.

There isn’t an exact time for when the update goes live, but my guess is it may coincide with the store update.

  1. The data transfer utility changes from vita to ps3 are good!

  2. “All system software updates will be automatically downloaded” – This simply downloads it, rather than installing it right? I doubt Sony want another Firmware 4.45 on their hands.
And it’s good to see features coming out from behind the paywall.

    • Just download… You have to accept T&C to install, so it will prompt you on boot

      • Good to hear.

      • Excellent. Good news about the other features too, especially save transfers!

      • you say that, but I put the BF4 beta on my download list from work. I got home and the PS3 had downloaded and installed it when I got home last night. I was a bit shocked but pleased, as I was expecting to install it.

      • @Bilbo Games download and install automatically, OS just downloads.

    • All system software updates will be automatically downloaded.

Will there even be any more system updates for the ps3 once the ps4 is in the wild? Seems like their offering something now that we probably won’t use going forward….

      • The PS3’s still got life in it yet! Think how long the PS2 lived.

      • … Still lives!

  3. I heard it has Cross Game Chat . lol. had to be said

  4. They should try and add GTA V connectivity to this. All joking aside its a nice little update.

  5. Hopefully it’s only purchases you choose to be downloaded rather than all purchases as I live with a nearly full HD & just delete stuff and download from list as & when.

  6. They should allow 0% trophy lists to be deleted.

    • +1

    • I guess hiding them is as close as we’re going to get to that ideal.

  7. Guessing there will be a ramp up in PS3 firmware releases with the PS4 on the horizon to being both systems in-line with each other.

  8. no way am I installing that update until I know it is safe lost nearly a TB of data on the last one.

    • Yeah, I’m also waiting for some feedback.

  9. Well it’s 4.32 Wednesday morning, it’s live for me.

    • Nice 1 for heads up. Is it mandatory update? Please.

  10. The update is there, and yes, it’s “mandatory”, assuming you want to actually log in to PSN.

And that’s the other, vitally important thing that wasn’t mentioned. The PlayStation Network is now officially known as just PSN. This is a huge thing they should have done ages ago. Makes the whole update worth it. All that time you can save typing just PSN instead leaves valuable seconds that can be spent on sarcasm.

Something’s going to go horribly wrong with the update now, isn’t it? It’ll brick the whole system, or replace all the icons with little badgers or something equally bad.

    • Ok, it didn’t do anything bad. But the trophy stuff is obviously useless, since that involves syncing trophies (from the shiny new “PSN” menu ;) which takes about a week to do lately.

So it’s some new features we had anyway with PS+, another feature I can’t be arsed waiting for to use, and 1 little change which is only of interest if you want to be sarcastic about it.

But it didn’t do anything bad, so that’s something, I guess.
