The Last Of Us Remastered Trailer Released, Evan Wells Discusses Visual Improvements

The Last of Us won loads of Game of the Year awards. It’s also coming to PS4 this summer, so it’ll probably win them all this year too. One of them was from us, and you can see a quick shot of that in among all the others after some quotes are displayed.

Then, once you get through that, you’ll get a glimpse at a scene in 1080p, with some remastered visuals. It’s a beautiful moment from later on in the game, so if you are waiting to play it on PS4 for the first time then it might be worth avoiding this trailer for now, or at least the last thirty seconds.

It’s our first real look at The Last of Us on PS4, though naturally we’ll have to wait until we can see it in motion before any direct comparisons. It’s 1080p, though. You know, full HD, the thing that many people think is the only thing that matters this generation? It’s that.

Evan Wells discussed in an interview what they’ve done to make it even better visually: “The graphic fidelity has been turned up to eleven,” Wells said when asked what would be new in the remastered edition, “we’ve got 1080p, we’re pushing the draw distances further, we’re creating higher resolution character models, better lighting, better shadows.”

They also revealed that their decision to bring the game to the PS4 came before the PS3 version had released:

“We had a lot of people on the forums saying ‘can I play this on PlayStation 4?’ We had actually been anticipating that, and started working on it pretty much as soon as we finished the PlayStation 3 [version]. We weren’t sure if it was going to go anywhere, but when we saw the fans clamouring for it we doubled-down, and put more effort behind it.”

  1. This means We will be able to play TLOU on our vitas!!

    • This is probably the greatest thing in the world. After Battenberg, obviously.

  2. Did anyone see the sixthaxis mentioned in the trailer GOTY

    • Blair literally mentions that in the first paragraph.

      • That’s why I ask cause I haven’t seen it but thanks for pointing out that he mentioned it

      • Ah, it sounded like you were asking if anyone else had seen it and it was a new thing :)

        It’s at exactly 42 seconds.

      • Did not mean sound aggressive by the way lol

      • It’s easy to mix, in the barrage of sites :)

  3. Looks good to me.

  4. Just sold my PS3 copy in preparation. Can’t see there being much of a difference tbh but any excuse to play through this masterpiece again.

  5. Impossible to make out anything of importance from a YouTube clip, but the original “suffered” from a bit of pop in and halo-artifacts as well as some sub-pixel shimmering, I’m expecting all that to be improved upon. Should come with Left Behind as well, which is nice.

Now, about that Uncharted remaster… (To be honest the only ND game I want a remaster of is UC1, just to play it without constant screen-tearing.

  6. All over this.

  7. Well done TSA, very impressive getting a mention. And I thought the gameplay was just a watercolour style render, then it moved, wow. I’m currently playing Uncharted 3, it’s so pretty that I almost don’t think it’s worth getting a ps4 yet. That couple of seconds of footage has got my interested again though.

  8. I actually won’t bother with this version: too expensive for someone that already owns the PS3 version and from what I see in the video I can’t tell that much of a difference.

    • I thought that

Overpriced, & from the bit shown not that different at all.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition hit the re-release sweetspot well

  9. Sorry for going slightly off topic here, but I’m really glad that TSA seems to be getting the recognition it deserves.

I’ve been pretty much visiting daily now since 2008 and it’s amazing to see the success all you guys have had. I see TheSixthAxis feature in all sorts of places now; it wasn’t long ago when you featured in the one of the inFAMOUS trailers too.

Hard work over the years has certainly paid off. Feel proud.
