Mortal Kombat X Could Be Getting The Custom Controller Treatment

Fighting games and custom controllers fit well together due to the fast paced nature of the gameplay, with many opting for controllers such as the Hori fighting sticks. Now it looks like Warner Bros. Interactive may be getting involved with that market, at least for Mortal Kombat X as some images have appeared from GameStop Expo showing off pads for the PS4 and Xbox One. These have yet to be officially confirmed, so if these are real then they may be prototypes and might not ever see release.

These images come from Alex Jebailey of Iron Galaxy Studios via his Instagram feed, stating that the designs are pending approval. The controller itself doesn’t have a d-pad and has six face buttons. If this is going to be out at launch then we’ll probably hear something soon from the publisher.

  1. Missed a trick (albeit a common one) there – Kustom Kontroller ;)

  2. No d-pad seems a bit odd. Unless I’m the only one who prefers it to the sticks.

    • The Hori FC4 controller (PS4) looks very similar, but has a dpad instead of stick.

    • This is by no means any kind of commentary on your perceived skill (as what the hell would I know?), but I think the hardcore tend to prefer a bit of waggle! ;)

      • Yeah I know the tournament players use arcade sticks but for controllers I always found d-pad more accurate than control pad sticks. The Streetfighter 4 fightpads were all d-pad’s.

  3. Never payed any attention to these type of controllers as I haven’t played fighting games since Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast, but I thought it would be a full size arcade stick on a base with 6 buttons.

I must be getting old as I remember when Street Fighter 1 was in the arcades and it had 2 big rubber buttons to hit for punch and kick. The harder you hit the button, the harder the character punched or kicked. I guess shortly after that they realised it would be easy to make Street Fighter 2 with 6 buttons.

    • Yup me too, those big red pads used to leave my fists red raw..I remember when the machine first went into our local arcade.. We was in awe. Shortly after the six button machine turned up, no where near as exciting

      • Yeah, I think I remember my little finger being blue as I wasn’t tall enough to directly punch down on them. Lol
