What We Played #349 – Far Cry 5, Sea Of Thieves & GRiP

And so we come to the end of another rather busy week. I’ve been keeping myself occupied by playing all manner of co-op games, as I continue to plug away at Vermintide 2’s pretty great four player rat and chaos horde battling action, set sail for my first few voyages since Sea of Thieves released, and laughed and joked my way through A Way Out. This weekend, I’ll be teaming up with Gamoc to sink time into Far Cry 5’s co-op mode.

Turning to the rest of the gang, and Jim has been chipping away at Nier: Automata. He can see why it got so much critical acclaim, but just wishes the combat wasn’t quite as floaty. He’s also fallen back into Rainbow Six Siege, which Ubisoft have done a sterling job of supporting with content.

Checking in with Tuff, he’s still not finished Assassin’s Creed: Liberation on PS Vita – “Jeebus that’s a long game,” he said. And he borrowed Jake’s Switch to confirm that, yup, he f-ing hates Mario. Speaking of Jake, it’s been a bit of Paladins, some Jak II and Scribblenauts Showdown, with a review hopefully not too far away for that.

Ade got his review for Q.U.B.E. 2 filed, and found that it was a lot of fun despite clearly being very, very heavily inspired by Portal. He also had fun coming up with acronyms for Q.U.B.E.:

  • Quick Uncle Beats Elephants
  • Queasy Usher Burps Emphatically
  • Questioning Upset Bear Experts
  • Quirky Udder Bending Enthusiast

Don’t ask about the last one.

Steve’s had a week full of games to review. Distortions was interesting but clumsy, with “extra violin based action”, Chuchel is a wonderful cartoony game, and he’s reviewing Fear Effect Sedna, but found that the original really has not aged well. Playing with the young ‘un, he’s nearly finished Knack and blitzed through Aqua-Kitty. He’s planning to get back into Monster Hunter World, now that there’s a new patch and monster.

Finally, Miguel and Dom have both been travelling. Miguel spent a six hour train journey playing and beating Celeste, with the last two levels leading him to describe it as “hella amazing”, while a very tired Dom has been heading home today. “I have been at GDC,” he said, “and played some amazing stuff including GRiP.

Now then, what have you all been playing?

I'm probably wearing toe shoes, and there's nothing you can do to stop me!

  1. The same random skipping about between many things as the last few weeks.

A lot of Nioh. Which is constantly killing me, but in a good way. I’m currently stuck on one boss with a silly name (looks suspiciously like a flan from many Final Fantasy games, sometimes known as a pudding, or sometimes even custard). But it’s not annoying me yet. My new tactic involves lighter armour. I can dodge around all over the place and avoid the 1-hit kill attack and I’ve just about managed it.

It’s less annoying than Bloodborne, which I just got fed up with.

There may have been something from the easter sale already. Infinite Minigolf is probably shit without VR. In VR it looks lovely, although the camera sometimes puts you inside a dog or somewhere else totally stupid. Still, it was only £3something.

And some Star Wars BF2. Not liking the changes this week. Or the way it suddenly gave me 9 crates to open which now only give pointless stuff. Or money you can’t spend on anything. And it takes ages to open a crate. (Extra long box opening animations are somewhere near the top of my list of things I hate in games)

  2. Played Burnout Paradise Remastered and nabbed the 350th Platinum 8)
Currently installing Far Cry 5 the now xD going to play that the whole weekend but first is Burnout at 8pm to help out folks who need the Wildcats Stadium trophy meet! :)

  3. Lots of gaming for me this week. Made the tricky decision last weekend to sell my PS4 as, sadly, it’s barely been used since getting the Switch last year. Nothing against the system whatsoever, the Switch just suits me better.
In it’s place I got a huge stack of eShop top-ups and used them to get some of the games my youngest has been pestering for:
Pokken Tournament DX is surprisingly fun, ARMS is as enjoyable as I remember it from last year’s beta (very) and Kirby Star Allies has been a perfect father/son co-op game.
We also put down pre-orders for Hyrule Warriors and Donkey Kong. There was also just enough credit left over to order a copy of Dark Souls for me >:D

Also dusted off my X360 copy of Burnout Paradise, a game which was a large part of my Uni years, so gave a nice amount of nostalgia. It’s not my favourite Burnout game but its still a fantastic game and holds up really well.

  4. Not that much gaming for me in this busy week, but I played some more Bloodbourne. I realised I can change my strategy completely, so instead of fighting each and every enemy in a level meticulously, I started to run through levels, to arrive fully equipped and healthy for the boss. Well, there I usually don’t last long, but at least I got more chances to figure out how to deal with them. At the moment, I’m trying to get past both this bloodthirsty thing and the vicar. Might get someone online to join in and help soon, not to get fed up.
Oh, yeah, and the werewolves, they’re a piece of cake meanwhile, so I do get better somehow…

    • You can enlist an NPC that you met earlier to help with the Blood-starved Beast, look around just outside that building for an interactive thingy which will summon him to your side. Just a word of warning though – he might die halfway through the fight and leave you scrambling for dear life! (see my video below)
Also, i think after this fight is when you get to start checking out Chalice dungeons.

      • I actually already summoned him twice, and he died twice in no time, and I didn’t manage to finish off the boss.
Then I thought I need more fire paper, which I cannot buy before killing the other boss, the vicar. Maybe I just try again with as many molotovs as possible.
Nice video, and I just realise I need a bigger weapon, I’m still stuck with the very first one you get, maybe that’s my problem…
Just got to this graveyard, very nice..! :o)

  5. Been well into Bloodborne and have made significant progress but I think I’ve now reached a point I can’t be arsed to progress beyond. I think it’s called the nightmare realm or something like that. Basically, frenzy is an awful game mechanic that I can’t be bothered with.

Other than that I’ve tried Destiny 2 again, still no reason to play, I’m hoping the go fast update next week improves matters.

Have obtained all multiplayer trophies on Battlefield 1 and have only 1 single player mission left to play through, but I don’t think I can be bothered to go for the platinum because obtaining collectibles isn’t my thing.

Fortnite progress has been made. I’m not talking about Battle Royale, I can’t be bothered with that on my own, but progress on Save the World.

That’s it for me. Battlefield 1 provided me with the multiplayer fix I’d been missing but now I’ve got all the online trophies for it I think I need a new one again.

  6. Lara Croft GO on PS4 – Easy plat (2-3 hours). Quite enjoyable game overall. Captured the true essence of Tomb Raider really well.

Assassins Creed: Rogue – It’s an old game but feels like a breath of fresh air to the AC franchise. Who knew what we needed was a trip down memory lane. AC as it should be. Bring back the old gameplay I say, and give AC it’s identity back again.

  7. Totally agree with both of these. Just hit 25% sync on AC Rogue. Looooooong way to go and I’m off to Jamaica for a few weeks now, so will be a while until I do any more.

    • That was supposed to be a reply to JR!

    • Wow, that’s awesome. Have fun and take care of yourself, maan :D

  8. AC Rogue. Completed it last night and loved every second of it. I have to say the story was excellent and I love the way it tied up Black Flag, Unity and AC 3. I found it a little too tough to progress however because I love sailing around listening to my crew singing shanties a little too much.

Just the AC I needed after the unbridled tedium and most boring character yet in Origins and Bayek. Why they didn’t make his wife the protagonist I have no idea.

Besides the excellent Rogue I’ve dabbled in Everybody’s Golf, Burnout, Life is Strange: BtS (excellent though highly depressing) and the intensely sterile GT Sport which I want to love having been with the series since day one but it’s just so, so sterile and boring. I honestly get more fun out of watching the videos and reading the historical facts.
