Depending on how you want to spin it, Red Dead Redemption 2 is either the outright biggest or second biggest entertainment launch of all time, as people around the world lap up being able to live the life of a cowboy. As you might guess, its only real challenger for the throne is Grand Theft Auto V, and the only reason why there’s any doubt is from the growth of digital game sales in the last five years.
As a retail game, it’s second only to GTAV’s opening three days. Red Dead hit $725 million worldwide, compared to the nice, round $1 billion that GTA V managed. However, with it being the most pre-ordered full game on PSN and having the biggest first day and first three days of full game sales on PSN, that’s pushed it beyond GTA V.
So there you go. Rockstar + Cowboys = Money!

“that’s pushed it beyond GTA V.” So does that mean it is the best selling game at launch overall (Digital + Retail)? I’m a bit sleep deprived so apologies if the answer to my question is obvious in the article text!!!

Crazy numbers. Will be interesting to see how sales are affected when RDR Online goes live.

Yeah that’ll be a big moment, I’ve got my fingers crossed that it’s a silky smooth Online launch just to see how mind blowing it big the sales get. Also, it’s great to see a slow, gritty western doing so well, it’s definitely an unpopular genre. I imagine almost all the sales are due to Rockstars reputation, very few on impulse. Well done to R*, it’s a beautifully made product and theyve set an amazing example :)
