Along with claims from Sony 1st parties that DVD just doesn’t cut it in terms of next-gen game storage, it’s now over to Bizarre Creations, developers of the Project Gotham Series, to add fuel to the fire. Seems that an innocent question from a fan has now created quite a stir on the web.
You won’t see different times of day per city because this involves recreating all the textures again (one for day and one for night). Whilst this wasn’t a problem for our dev team, it was a problem fitting all this data onto a single DVD. So we’ve worked around the problem by providing different lighting models per city. For example, Macau is always in the daytime, but if you play it during a storm everything looks darker and more foreboding.
Basically, there’s not enough space on the DVD for tracks to have both night and day modes – some tracks will be set at night, some during the day. Each will have dynamic weather conditions though.
This statement goes along with one from EA who have recently complained about the 7-gig limit being too tight for this year’s FIFA 08. Blu-Ray offers up to 50-gig of space.
