FirstPlay 010: Full Contents

A day later than usual thanks to yesterday’s PSN maintenance and my usual losing struggle with Remote Play on my PSP but here is what you will find inside the latest episode of FirstPlay.  This week’s highlight is of course the fourth of Half Brick’s minis titles that FirstPlay are ‘giving away’, Rocket Racing.  Or at least it would be if it was not “temporarily unavailable” like Age of Zombies was last week.  Come on FirstPlay, two weeks in a row?

Reviews

  • Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
  • The Descent Part 2 (Blu-ray movie)

Previews

  • Quantum Theory (Not a lecture from a German Jewish patent examiner.)
  • Backbreaker (Not an encounter with a trainee chiropractor.)

Screenshot Galleries (Don’t forget these screenshots can be saved as wallpaper.)

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • Tron: Evolution (Free-running, techno frisbees, light cycles, recognizers, oh my!)
  • Front Mission Evolved
  • Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Featured Downloads

  • Rocket Racing (Or it least it will be when no longer “temporarily unavailable”.)

  • Best of PSN:
    – Heavy Rain Chronicles: The Taxidermist
    – Bioshock 2: Sinclair Solutions Test Pack (Comes with less RAM than a ZX80.)

Whatever it was they maintained yesterday, for me the PSN store is now slow and sometimes unresponsive, likely to give an error, the usual one being 80023102, has crashed and dumped me back to the XMB a few times and once I managed to get FirstPlay downloading it is taking an age.  I have given up trying to buy Joe Danger today after about a dozen attempts.  How has the PSN Store been behaving for you today?

  1. PSN Store has been awfully slow, guess the maintenance didn’t help

    • maintenance, code for screwing up something that was working just fine.

      • lol – yup. MAG servers were “maintained” after the patch and expansion this week and have been temperamental to say the least.

  2. Had loads of the same trouble to, finally got Joe Danger to start downloading. After the 10th try.

  3. so it’s not just me having problems with the store, i thought it was my connection because of the pile of shite isp i’m stuck with.
been trying to download some comics but media go is just giving me a blank screen.

what exactly is the problem they’re having with these games anyway? they’ve been on the store for months, and they’ve given away a few minis already.

i’d like to see the descent 2 review, the first one was great, got it on umd, and completely failed to get round to seeing it in the cinema

    • Glad it’s not just me having problems with the store. The problem they are having with the minis is that these ‘free’ versions have their own link (its not the same as the one already on the store for the game) and somewhere along the line between FirstPlay and the PSN Store something goes wrong so the FP app can’t find the link it’s looking for.

These aren’t the links you’re looking for, you can’t go about your business. Move along…

    • Last week i think the reason for the delay was said to be because they hadn’t yet uploaded the correct version of the mini to the store. I didn’t see any further explanation so i’m not sure exactly what that means..

  4. Hmmm, thats odd, when I downloaded FirstPlay right after it was released the Mini downloaded just fine, must be this PSN maintainence screwing everything.

  5. I got it alright this morning

    • Maybe it’s just the currently flaky store causing the problem with Rocket Racing then.

  6. Yup getting the same errors, gave up trying to download anything and have gone back to watching 24.

  7. Much like Enzo, I had no problems getting the free mini yesterday before the maintenance started. I was a bit confused at it being called Aero Racer instead of Rocket Racing though.

    • yep, aero racer for me too, confused me a bit as I was sure it was rocket racer though O_o
      anyway, mine downloaded fine?

  8. the store is so slow………….

  9. I’m glad it’s not just me having trouble with the Store. I was looking around to see if there were similar reports earlier but found nothing. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

FirstPlay was a mixed bag for me this week, I found the reviews and previews a bit lacking if I’m honest, but the Network Highlights were somewhat interesting. Overall I closed it feeling a bit meh. “It’s a 5 from us” as Lucy Porter would say.

  10. Everything was slick as snot pre-maintenance. I’d swiped around 2½GB of stuff (including Joe Danger) before things went down. Piss-poor if Sony’s got it operating like a one-legged golfer subsequently.

    • Did you see that thing in the news the other day about that 1 legged golfer? He was actually awesome.
