Rumour: Duke Nukem Forever Back On?

The rumour mill is well and truly grinding away today as Kotaku are claiming that sources who wish to remain anonymous have contacted them claiming that not only is Duke Nukem Forever back on, but Borderlands developer Gearbox Software is in charge of development.  You may remember that Gearbox was outed earlier this year as the developer behind ‘Duke Begins’ – before everything got a bit messy.

As you might expect, there has been a verbal brick wall of ‘no comments’ – however Take-Two Interactive has confirmed it still maintains publishing rights to the title.

Gearbox Software President Randy Pitchford has declined to comment on the matter, but has indicated that he may be able to better clarify the situation at this year’s Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle.

So, this is very much a rumour for now – but if the Duke was to make a return, would any of you be interested?

  1. At the moment he’s like a poorly old man on his death bed. Every so often some new miracle treatment comes along that keeps him alive but he’s still on life support and needs a heart transplant. Would it be better to just turn off the machine and remember his great life?

Borderlands was excellent and if Gearbox can use their skills (and maybe even that same engine) it could bring Duke back and better than ever. I’m long past holding my breath though.

  2. Matt Hazard…

  3. I thought Serious Sam killed the Duke…

  4. I’d certainly be interested, the trailer that came out in 2001 absolutely rocked… not so much dukes character but the ideas crammed into it were immense. The shrinking gun zapping enemies then duke treading on them, a vehicle section on the back of a mule, blowing up bad guys with an old school cannon, etc… etc… and that B-Movie acting… “Hey pal, what you going to do, save the world all by your self?” – if they released that old unreal engine game today I’d get it just for the spectacle. I’m no 3d realms lover but that trailer looked absolutely awesome.

    • Trouble is most of those were old ideas. The shrinking gun was straight out of Duke 3D, as was the hammy voice acting. Back then it was a clever pastiche of macho hero movies, now it’s just cliche in itself.
