Not everyone was overjoyed with the news that sci-fi epic RPG Mass Effect 2 will be docking with the PS3 this January. After all, the game is synonymous with the Xbox 360 platform and one of the best reasons to own the console. Responding to the game spreading its console wings, Microsoft are still bullish that if you want the “full Mass Effect experience”, the Xbox 360 is still the place to be. A Microsoft representative spoke to IGN, stating:
“With both Mass Effect titles launching first on Xbox 360 combined with the wealth of available paid downloadable content on Xbox Live today, Xbox 360 remains the best place to experience the Mass Effect franchise.”
And just to put this one to bed. Yes, Mass Effect 1 appeared on the PC and was ported by EA. But, no, there is no possibility this game will also jump space-ship to the PS3. Microsoft put up the coin for the first game and they own the publishing rights. They just don’t own the IP – hence why this January is looking awesome for PS3 owners. The spokesperson has confirmed the status of the first game’s future by stating:
“The original Mass Effect is absolutely an Xbox 360 exclusive, making Xbox 360 the only place to get the full Mass Effect experience.”
That’s that. Right?

what if a deal could be struck between sony, microsoft and ea for mass effect 1 and 2 and all dlc on 1 bluray (crossing fingers and wishing)
hazelam
you think ms are ever gonna let go of their exclusivity for mass effect 1?
WolfieZero
I got both Mass Effects on the 360, but I’ve not really played through either (well, not touched ME2 yet). I feel the Xbox isn’t an RPG console, they don’t sit right with me. I ended up making a loss on selling Start Ocean on 360 and getting it for the PS3 as it feel natural. So once again, I’m felling I might play ME2 on the PS3 rather than the 360.
I’m probably in a extremely tiny minority with this, but hey! It’s not a fan boy thing, it’s just how I personally feel; I accept there is no reason for this.
gezarelli83
You sound like a fanboy to be honest but it seems you haven’t come out of the closet yet and are in denial.
maybe that explains why you prefer one over the other but have ZERO reasons for it?
And mass effect is perfect on 360 and i expect ps3 to also be fantastic.
I am a Mass effect fanboy so i will play it on any console or pc because i love video games not machines.(although i do prefer the 360 controller)
Kovacs
Well, I think Wolfie might be talking about preferring the PS3 controller. I could be wrong, but that’s the impression I got from his comments.
Personally, I really have trouble with the 360 controller. Everyone is different but I just can’t get the hang of it.
aerobes
I’m the same, Kovacs. My love for the DS3 is actually the main reason why I buy all multiformat titles on the PS3.
poorwretch
with you on that one
gezarelli83
he/she says they have no reason why they prefer ps3 and never mentioned the controller so i’m not sure how you came to that conclusion?
i prefer the bigger controller over the smaller one but still love playing MGS and GOW but controller is a bit fiddly thats all nothing i ‘ can’t get the hang of ‘
nice try at your own bit of fanboyism( i don’t understand how you cant get the hang of a controller but are a video game journalist) but i actually enjoy both consoles just have a minor controller preference not a can’t get the hang of it problem.
gezarelli83
terrible grammar yes!
hazelam
i don’t know “the xbox isn’t an rpg console” doesn’t sound like a comment on the pad.
gideon1451
This discussion is getting a bit petty?

Oh dear. Its turning into one of those days where some people need to take a step back and look up the word “opinion” in the dictionairy.
Kovacs
Just because I write about games does not mean I am automatically adept at all aspects of gaming. It’s a matter of preference. I have played countless hours with an Xbox controller, and when I say I can’t get the hang of it I mean I can’t get to the place where it feels as natural to me as a DS3. Poor choice of words on my behalf perhaps, but for you to insinuate it was an attempt at fanboyism clearly shows you haven’t been around these parts long.
stonyk
Bizzarly I think the 360 machine is pants – it breaks/crashes regularly, it’s makes more noise than my surround sound at full volume and looks pig ugly, but I do prefer the controller to the ps3’s. Can’t Sony and nintendo cone together and make Sony machine with nintendo controls. What a console that would be!
JoshHood
It’s a real shame, I was hoping to get both for PS3. I grabbed ME1 in the recent Steam sales on PC for a couple of quid though, so I guess I’ll play it there. PC ME1 to PS3 ME2 save transfer please EA?
poorwretch
I wouldn’t worry about that too much if you played me1 and remember your major decisions you get to revise them in me2 at some point.
Plus you can always recreate the look of your avatar.
The most important thing is to know the story, witch I sure bioware will cater in some way or the other for newcomers.
I personally played both on pc (and actually changed my class even though I kept the other save datafrom me1) but will be getting the ps3 version for further replays and trophies of course.
simplebob
From what I’ve read carrying the save file over from the first game didnt make a massive amount of difference to ME2. Reviews seem to state that this side of things wasnt implemented as fully as it could have been. Looking at Dragon Age there was a ton of history and back story, guessing ME1 will just be back story rather than playable for the PS3, which I have no problems with. Just glad I get to play some of the best games around on one console.
gezarelli83
There are some pretty big decisions like certain people or races dying or becoming extinct and also some main characters whos feelings and attitude towards you change depending on choices.plus a few side missions that are a nice touch.
my current play through has a fair amount of choices and old characters that are acting completely differently that i didn’t experience during my vanilla run through.
Octaeder
Without an ME1 save, Mass Effect 2 makes some pretty terrible decisions. Like assuming you killed Wrex off. And a galaxy without Wrex isn’t a galaxy worth saving.
Crazy_Del
I played ME1 on 360 what a great game but I bought a PS3 when I had Red Rings of Death (2nd time) and decided not to get 360 anymore. I still haven’t fully played ME2 only watched my mate playing it and had a wee shot at it. I kinda missed my ME1 save file which can be imported to ME2 but like I said my 360 broke and it don’t matter to me to start ME2 afresh on PS3, still the best looking game on 360 I’ve ever played.
aphex187
PC fk’nut!
TRiLoGY
Dissapointing, but ive played through 1 and 2 on the PC so i guess i’m not too bothered.
However, I feel sorry for the people that might be new to the series. When you have played through the first one and have invested time in the characters, the second one kind of means more to you and you already have a connection with the characters (if that makes sense). You wouldn’t show someone who has never watched Star Wars “The Empire Strikes Back” without watching “A New Hope”! Also, having the Save games carry over makes it feel more like your own personal story! Apparently the third installment has over 1000 story variables affected by the desicions you made in the 1st two games..
tonycawley
Now that genuinely is a fanboy comment through and through.
gezarelli83
it is embarrassing.
i understand support for games but not the company that makes the console.

Never mind, It could have easily been neither.
I’m as happy that ME2 is arriving on PS3 for personal reasons as much as I’m happy that PS3 only owners will now have the opportunity to try one of the best games around.
It’s a game that will easily stand on its own merits without having to rely upon gamers knowing the far end and back again about what happened in ME1.
It would be particularly nice if all the DLC came with it either on disc or possibly via a voucher download from the store, fingers crossed.
gezarelli83
it could be difficult to understand some of the plot if you have never played ME1 but i don’t know what Bioware are planning to do to fill the gaps.
time will tell but it could mean me buying it for ps3 if it has new content as the games are both brilliant(1+2)
