Resistance 3 Coming In 2011

When Resistance 3 was confirmed to exist at gamescom earlier this month, we were left guessing as to when it might be released. Today Insomniac Games have confirmed via Twitter that the latest entry in the alternate-history shooter series is indeed scheduled for a launch sometime in 2011.

The developer also revealed that whilst Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One will be at next month’s Penny Arcade Expo, Resistance won’t. “For you folks wondering what’s next in terms of Resistance 3: Stay tuned.” reads the tweet. “We won’t be revealing anything at PAX, but more to come.”

We’ve yet to hear a more specific release window for R3, but with Killzone 3 out in spring, an autumn release seems likely. It’ll make it a busy end to the year for Insomniac, with the new Ratchet also already confirmed for a release in the second half of 2011.

  1. Hooray. I still loves me some Resistance 2 online so I’ll be looking forward to this.

  2. After the lameness that was resistance 2, i’m not really arsed about this. The original was good, for a launch title, but 2 didn’t really do much better than 1, still played like an early launch title, many improvements needed.

    • I feel exactly the same way, while I enjoyed the first one, the second just wasnt much of an improvement imo, and in some cases was a step backwards (no co-op campaign, for example).

    • Agreed. R1 was superb at the time of release as it was the first real Playstation on-line shooter of note. For me it changed the way I played games. Unfortunately by the time R2 came out it had already been surpassed in so many areas, such as graphics, gameplay and realism (or the feel of realism).
I hope that R3 raises the bar significantly.

  3. I’ve not played either 1 or 2 but have considered getting them many times though think 1 could be a bit dated now and have heard some bad things about the story / characters in 2. I may pick up 3 when it comes out depending upon the reviews. I have limited gaming time so only have time for 1 or 2 high profile online shooters a year (Halo Reach and CoD B Ops will probably fill that hole now at least until 2011).

  4. The live action trailer makes it feel like a Survival Horror. Could be a new direction….?

    • Maybe you are on to something.

Could it be that the snippets of a unannounced Move game that have been floating around are actually Resistance 3? There Has been rumors that Insomniac are working on a survival Horror game

    • Good point – there seemed to be more focus on civilian survivors than the military/war, or maybe that was just a clue that the world will be less deserted in R3 as in the earlier ones the towns only seemed to contain Chimera or Military.

Given the luke warm reception to R2 it wouldn’t surprise me if it has had a complete overhaul hence why it isn’t out this Christmas, the core concept is still sound – alien invasion and R&C style weapons in a realistic environment so I’m not writing it off yet.

I’m surprised it’s coming in 2011 though – it wouldn’t surprise me if it slips to early 2012. Looking at the logo it seem it will be another FPS set in New York too, I was hoping for a game set in Russia with the counter-attack on the Chimerian HQ but I guess they’re not planning on finishing the game with a trilogy…

      • When it’s released they have been working with it for 3years don’t you think that’s enough?

    • I really hope you’re right.

  5. I think the guys at Insomniac are onto a really good storyline with Resistance, but never quite pull it off as well as they could. Rather than all these fancy guns being used, bubble shields, magical alien powers flying all over the place, and playing a main character who never shows any facial expressions because he’s ROCK HARD, why not create a game that really simulates the fears of a city under the attack of another life form. Playing as an everyday character in a city, trying to survive as everyone around him loses the plot and wreak havoc. My favourite part (and probably the only part I enjoyed) of R2, was making my way through the back gardens in the neighborhood covered in those egg things, because it felt exactly how I just described. They could do with improving the graphics a bit too… they suck.

    • It’s a great notion but R2 lost its way somehow. Although the new teaser trailer implies that they might’ve found new direction. One that’ll pull the “meh-fans” like me back into it. R1 was great fun; flawed but great fun…. especially split-screen co-op.

I reckon Insomniac spread themselves too thinly by concentrating on the multiplayer to a detrimental degree.

      • I loved R1 single player, MP was rubbish IMO. R2 I tried the beta, didn’t like MP again so didn’t bother with it at all. R3 trailer looked wicked, but again, I wont buy until I see more. Hoping it’s good though.

  6. in the first two games it didnt really feel like a resistance, u never saw anyone civilians. the first maybe and there was always a lot of soldiers wiht u. but in the second u were always on your own which i didnt really like even though i loved the campaign. hopefully as said above it could be like a survival horror with resistance groups aand not just the army.

one more question, its set in the 50’s yeh, so they had nuclear weapons. if i was presisdent at the time i would have evacuated and nuked everycity to kill the chimera, just a though

    • I don’t quite understand why everyone in the 50’s is running around using state of the art headsets to communicate.

    • Great game that. Press big red button. Platinum trophy.
      lol

  7. great news for fans. Not a big fan of it to be honest, but it’s a big seller.

  8. I enjoyed the first two games, especially the campaign split-screen co-op mode in the first one. Looking forward to finding out more about the third installment.

  9. I really do hope they can shake things up in this edition. Resistance 1 was flawed but great, and Resistyance felt like a step backwards. This needs more piolished graphics, new and returning weapons (I want the reapers to be back) and a change of direction in story. The survival-horroresque style of the teaser would make a welcome change to Resistance.

  10. More Ratchet news :D
