Sony are not expecting a massive launch-day rush for its new Move controller. Speaking to Eurogamer, UK managing director Ray Maguire has stated that, rather than huge day-one sales numbers, the company expects more organic growth for the new device through positive word of mouth. He states:
“Exactly as with EyeToy in the PS2 days, it’s a product that needs to be sampled. You need to get your hands on it. You need to understand it. You need to try it. Am I expecting a massive day one? Not particularly. We didn’t with EyeToy, either. It went on to be massively successful.”
We’ve gotten our hands on Move and like what we’ve experienced so far. The new doohickey will launch on September 15th in the UK, with Australia getting the device on September 16th, North America on September 19th, and, finally, Japan on October 21st.

I just pre-ordered it, right before this was posted. =P

I agree with his point. I think people need to see it to be convinced by it. I love new tech so pre-ordered a while ago but I know plenty of people who will play with mine (and the Move controller, huh huh) before making the decision.

Given most of the decent releases aren’t going to emerge until after Xmas now I’m not suprised that it’s going to be a slow burner. I’m waiting for TSA’s view on RUSE and it’s Move support. If it scores well I may get one in the next couple of months but if not I will wait until Socom and Killzone are released.

“Good morning, Stewie.”
“Good morning to you too, Stewie.”
“Shall we take over the world?”
“Yes, lets.”

LOL

Stewie rocks

To be honest, I’ve just pre-ordered move based upon my experiences with the RUSE demo. I played the PC beta, loved it, but found the limitations of the controller setup to be a bit too much for me to really connect with the console version. Hopefully with move implementation this will feel a lot more fluid and natural and I will enjoy it more.
Besides, I just love most new tech that comes out so HAD to get it. ;-)

haha that is you in a nutshell really David :P

I was reading about this last night and nearly spat my toast out!
“It went on to be massively successful”
What world are you living on? It’s sold around 12 million or so but a massive success? You, sir, are delusional. Seriously. Stop the bullshit. It loses you respect, instantly.
yogdog
12 million is a fair amount considering the amount of ps3’s out there, and the lack of games for the product. I see your point though :)
cc_star
140m(ish) PS2s
12m EyeToy’s
Less than a 10% attach rate, which for a cheap accessory wasn’t great.
Radboud
He wasn’t talking about the PS Eye for PS3, but of the EyeToy for PS2.
bunimomike
Not only did it sell poorly but it’s considered, by the majority, to have been a failure. His comments aren’t even media-exaggeration. They’re a lie.
emekcrash
Well, Kinect seems just like the EyeToy… And its slower…
unclebob
Was that meant to be posted in this thread of conversation, or were you just eager to let us know of your fanboy tendencies?
jacklum
Only 3 games sold more than 12 mill on the PS2 (GT3 and GTA:VC & SA). If you compare it to that, it seems successful enough.
bunimomike
Comparing hardware with software isn’t a good thing. The adoption rate of it was crap. Even if it was considered “reasonable” it will still be very much removed from being a “massive success”.
yogdog
yeah, realised after I posted, stupid mistake :(
Demibeard
My pre-order went on a soon as it could, I loved the tech demos and the precision appears to be really good. Everything I’ve read / watched about this device leads me to think it could be an essential piece of equipment.
I’m rather glad I have blinds though, I wouldn’t want my neighbours to see my glowing orbs :-)

Wait until you play the table tennis!
Remember, it’s all in the wrist.
bunimomike
Something every lonely gamer knows all too well.
Radboud
Oh yeah, table tennis was so freaking cool…
Mmmmm,
I still need to pre-order…
carson321
Make sure you keep looking out at different sites as they keep changing their pre order prices, always worth while changing to the cheapest
Demibeard
I’ve had 2 e-mails from the shop telling me it’s reduced in price, very good service if you ask me. They also have my pre-order for GT5 at £32.95 :-) hopefully that won’t go the other way.

Whether this is a comment to forewarn shareholders not to expect huge day one sales or not fair play to Sony for not getting carried away with the moment. Move does have the potential to be big and I hope it is as Sony seem to want to cater for both the core market and the casual adopters. I’m a 360 and PS3 owner (won’t mention the wii I also have) and primarily play the 360 but am far more interested in Move than Kinect though will bide my time before purchasing it.
cc_star
Move & Kinect will sell in the same way the Wii has.
Someone goes around someone’s house who owns one, has a great laugh and goes out and buys one themselves.
The lower barrier to entry (initial price) may mean Move builds up steam quicker though
Eldave0
This is probably a stupid question but are all future games going to be Move supported once the hardware is released? I can imagine a lot of games being spoiled because devs insist on using the Move when a standard controller would do so much better (see: pretty much every Wii title)
monkeyspoon
No it won’t be. It will be added if the devs think it adds to the experience but it will most probably have dual shock controls too. Take resi 5 for example.
Eldave0
Yeah, I figured they wouldn’t remove Dual Shock cabability, but what I’m worried about is devs wasting time incorporating move support into games that really don’t need it. Games are short enough these days as it is!
monkeyspoon
For some games it would be awesome if they add it. I’m hoping it’s in Dead Space 2.
Eldave0
Certainly there is a lot of potential here. The Move seems like a terrific bit of kit and I’m really looking forward to quite a few games (Ruse, Heavy Rain, RE5, Sorcery, Socom, etc) but I can also see this having a detremental effect on a lot of future games in terms of length and polish
Anachronous
I’m hoping that they won’t just restrict the new control style to ‘full’ disk based games but expand it into their PSN library too. Whether this takes the form of patches for existing content or new content from now on isn’t a point I’m too fussed about so long as it’s done properly instead of shoehorning it in. I remember playing some of the games on my Wii that bragged about controls with every type of controller available for the system and some of them were just utter rubbish. *crosses fingers*
Eldave0
As old and boring as this sounds I would love bejewled 2 to get move support. Any game like that what should really be played on a PC with a mouse would be useful
monkeyspoon
I expect Move will sell slow but pick up speed quickly once people get to play it. It will speak to both the casual and the hardcore gamers. Kinect will sell big to begin with due to a heavy marketing campaign. It will the slow right down and have massive returns and eBay sales once people realise they have been duped and Kinect is broken with no decent games.
Thechunkymunky
I’d love to get Move but I havn’t got enough room for it. (I don’t think I do anyway lol)
Radboud
No need to have lots of room ;)
You can use Move with Socom 4, RUSE, etc. while you sit on the couch (or a chair for that matter)…
I’d even would say that if you want to play RUSE (or SOCOM4) on your PS3, get Move, it works fantastic and a lot faster and more intuitive than a DS3!
Thechunkymunky
I know you can use it while sitting down but i’m unsure if i’ll catch the wall. (I sit right next to it) I’m not sure if the curtains would interfere with the PSEyes line of sight as well.
Another (slightly funny) dilemma i’m having is which hand to have the Move controller in. I’m left-handed so I’d try and use it in that hand, but if I got the sub-controller, i’d be inclinded to use it in my left hand as well (associating the analog stick with control, like a DS3) :D
Lastly, I’ve tried the RUSE demo and suprisingly found myself enjoying it. I can see how Move can be useful though in that sort of game. (Sorry for the long comment btw lol)
bunimomike
Cut your right arm off and be done with it! :-)
teflon
Don’t forget MAG, Heavy Rain, KZ3….
The MAG beta has actually made my mind up for me. Stupid Move splash screens made me go “WANT!” :P
Thechunkymunky
@B’Mike: I’ll have to use the Sub-Controller with my foot then! (Left one obviously) xD
@Radboud: I’ve been interested in Move for ages, but Echochrome 2 grabbed my full attention. I’m a sucker for anything Playstation so i’ll probably get it (I’m one of the minority that got Eyetoy :D)
Radboud
I feel the same, got EyeToy too and enjoyed it very much :P
jimmy-google
I still have friends come roudn and use the eyeToy. It’s the only ps2 item that I still use.
Anachronous
@Radboud : That was actually my main reason for pre-ordering Move. I had previously played about with the console demo and the PC beta of RUSE and found that the PC version won hands down for usability. Really hoping that Move will bring some of that fluidity back to the console version.
