Polyphony Bust The Install Size Limits With GT5

Gran Turismo 5, Sony’s big white hope for 2010 and set to be the biggest, baddest driving simulator ever created, is also going to be touting one of the biggest, baddest hard drive install sizes, too.  If you thought that sitting through 25 minutes of Devil May Cry was tortuous, Dante’s got nothing on a GTR.

Series head Kazunori Yamauchi tweeted over the weekend that whilst gamers could get away with a 256 megabyte install size, it’s going to need you to dedicate an optional 10 gigabyte if you can spare the room, presumably to reduce load times and store DLC.

Yep, that’s one hell of an install, which Yamauchi claims will make the experience ‘comfortable’.  For those with 40 gigabyte hard drives that’s going to be something of a commitment, for sure, but it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise given that the relatively bite-sized GT 5 Prologue sapped six gigabytes anyway.

What’s TSA’s readership think about this?  Is this revelation a shock to anyone?  Does anyone else think that ‘comfortable’ is a wee bit vague, and there’s likely to be even more hard drive real estate at risk if you want to be ‘well off’?

We’ll find out soon enough.

  1. I would prefer this to long loading times while reading from the Blu-ray anyday. Its when you get both that it annoys and dissapoints me.

  2. Well, after checking. I’ve got 1974mb left out of a possible 37gb. Something’s going to need to change.

  3. Im litterally down to /megabytes/ on my 60gig, Im always downloading demos and deleting them the next week.
I guess if I delete the GT5:P data, and also the MW2 data after BO comes out, I should have enough space.

    • Don’t delete your gt prologue data! Gt 5 imports the cars you’ve bought in that game so you can play them in arcade mode and not need to be buy them again!

      • That goes in the Save Data. Deleting the GT5P Game Data is fine, it’s just patches and stuff.

  4. i only have the 40gb console but I would be willing to spare 10gb if it lives up to expectation (or close enough)
It’s not that bad because I don’t store video on my PS3, plus I trade in games so My hard drive always has about 15gb free.

  5. ahhh!!!

  6. i have an 80GB but plenty of room there! but what’s it gonna restrict if you don’t install? if it’s the 3d stuff then it wont bother me but i would definitely like faster load times.

  7. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest,as I’ve had a 320GB drive for quite some time.

Shouldn’t really be an issue for anyone. You can get massive HDDs for less than the price of a game, and changing the drive is child’s play. If ever there was a game worth upgrading your drive for, this is it.

  8. I had 40GB and had to upgrade to a 320GB which now has 100GB left ;)

  9. i have an 80gig ps3 but put a 320gig hard drive in it so its fine for me…least its optional as when forza 3 game came out on 360 a lot of arcade xbox360 owners were bit in the ass as it was on 2 dvds and the second disc had to be installed or else you lost out on a fair few cars and tracks, or buy a microsoft hard drive at stupid prices.

  10. No surprise really. Got plenty of space to spare on my new 250Gb.
