Gran Turismo 5, Sony’s big white hope for 2010 and set to be the biggest, baddest driving simulator ever created, is also going to be touting one of the biggest, baddest hard drive install sizes, too. If you thought that sitting through 25 minutes of Devil May Cry was tortuous, Dante’s got nothing on a GTR.
Series head Kazunori Yamauchi tweeted over the weekend that whilst gamers could get away with a 256 megabyte install size, it’s going to need you to dedicate an optional 10 gigabyte if you can spare the room, presumably to reduce load times and store DLC.
Yep, that’s one hell of an install, which Yamauchi claims will make the experience ‘comfortable’. For those with 40 gigabyte hard drives that’s going to be something of a commitment, for sure, but it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise given that the relatively bite-sized GT 5 Prologue sapped six gigabytes anyway.
What’s TSA’s readership think about this? Is this revelation a shock to anyone? Does anyone else think that ‘comfortable’ is a wee bit vague, and there’s likely to be even more hard drive real estate at risk if you want to be ‘well off’?
We’ll find out soon enough.

That’s quite alot. I have a 80GB, so I’ll be okay, but only after I’ve deleted a bunch of demos and other unnecessary stuff.

Phew thankfully im getting a 320gb in a few weeks. Looks like i should pick up some teabags, milk, biscuits and a long book while im waiting for the mother of all installs
exellentgamer
That’s crazy
beeje13
i’d install the whole 50GB if they let me!
can’t fill my HDD, know matter how hard I try!
solidsteven
how big is your harddrive?
Kennykazey
I’ve got a 500 gb hdd, bring it Yamauchi!
solidsteven
don’t taunt him or it will be a 1tb install lol
solidsteven
oh shit 10 gb?! that will take bloody ages install. if you thought bioshock took ages gt5 will hold the new record
PoisonedAce
It doesn’t really bother me as when GT5 comes out, I will delete GT Prologue and use that space as I can’t see myself going back to it after when GT5 arrives.

I’ve mentioned this elsewhere but for your benefit: gt5 imports the cars you’ve bought in prologue. No data. No extra cars…
Loxstokk
Actually thinking about it you might be able to just keep the saved game file and still import the cars…

I’m not sure you can actually. It has been confirmed for the PSP verison, but no word on Prologue. I think it’s because Prologue saves aren’t locked and so you can literally download a completed game save and use it, without even owning the game.

So the 10gig install is optional, to cut down loading times and things? Someone explain please. Not that I don’t have the space, I’m just curious…

The PS3’s reading speed off Blu-Ray discs is pretty slow. By doing the optional install it’ll install some of the content to the HDD, where data can be read faster, allowing for faster loading times.
I don’t think it will be bad without installing though. We all know he’s obsessed with perfection and if the loading times are really that bad, I’m sure he would have made it mandatory.

I think GT6 will have very little HDD requirement space and faster loading times as 4 or so years ago developers wouldn’t have figured out how to reduce loading times on PS3.
MW2 did it, UC3 will do it and KZ3 so I see no reason why newer games won’t load quick as well.

my HDD is 500GB, so i’m not fussed :)

I wouldn’t mind having the entire game running on my hard drive, and just using the disc itself to boot it, I mean come on – ITS Gran Turismo 5!, you have to make room for this bad boy!
