Gran Turismo 5, Sony’s big white hope for 2010 and set to be the biggest, baddest driving simulator ever created, is also going to be touting one of the biggest, baddest hard drive install sizes, too. If you thought that sitting through 25 minutes of Devil May Cry was tortuous, Dante’s got nothing on a GTR.
Series head Kazunori Yamauchi tweeted over the weekend that whilst gamers could get away with a 256 megabyte install size, it’s going to need you to dedicate an optional 10 gigabyte if you can spare the room, presumably to reduce load times and store DLC.
Yep, that’s one hell of an install, which Yamauchi claims will make the experience ‘comfortable’. For those with 40 gigabyte hard drives that’s going to be something of a commitment, for sure, but it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise given that the relatively bite-sized GT 5 Prologue sapped six gigabytes anyway.
What’s TSA’s readership think about this? Is this revelation a shock to anyone? Does anyone else think that ‘comfortable’ is a wee bit vague, and there’s likely to be even more hard drive real estate at risk if you want to be ‘well off’?

I’m not fussed about the Install Size as I’ve had a 120GB ps3 hard drive since the beginning and have now got a new ps3 slim with the same amount of space. Yes it is annoying deleting stuff but it’s not like we all haven’t before with our 8MB ps2 memory cards :)

ok so looking at some of these comments im thinking some of you guys missed the optional part so it wont affect sales but yes may speed up loading times but if you play online and got it installed then you may still have to wait for someone that doesnt so it negates the effect.

I myself am not looking to buy the game as it doesn’t appeal to me but I’m sure true fans will find the space for the game (it is optional) I mean I wish modnation had done this to reduce their loading times. and just like “samiro05” said, who doesnt remember clearing space on their ps2 8gb for a new game!!!!!!!

If it’s just an option, what exactly is the issue? Should they have remoived it altogether becuase it’s big? I’d lay money removing it and using that as a reason would have sparked far greater outrage than this could ever inspire.

What model HDD did you buy ericzap? I just upgraded to 640GB because it was the largest drive that would fit in the case of the phat at the time. The 1TB drives were too thick (12.5mm instead of 9.5mm).

I’m not going to mind much. After I got a slim after my phat (60GB) died I’m still amazed that I have 10GB more memory than the whole capacity of my old system.
Plus, I/you guys could just delete previous game data. Most of that is just update data so you won’t lose saves and they’re usually over a GB.;-)
