Move: Guide to the First Weekend

We thought we’d give you a day or two to get used to those vibrantly glowing orbs before we told you what your options were. We have, of course, previously given you a fantastic guide to all thing Move and a lovely little launch guide to get you excited for it. It’s Saturday night though, and you’ve probably got mates coming round who are keen to see your new toy. Here’s what you could be showing them:

Launch Titles

R.U.S.E

Real time strategy control has always been an issue for consoles and Move has the potential to solve that problem. Ubisoft’s latest strategy title seems like it could be a wonderful way to show off just what the Move can do.

Sports Champions

This collection of sports games is the familiar hook for anyone that has a passing understanding of motion controls on consoles. Wii Sports is a clear inspiration but the extra precision and subtlety of control afforded by PlayStation’s magic wand makes this a much more realistic, if slightly less accessible, option. Read our full review here.

Start the Party

Augmented reality mini-games that are sure to make a room full of kids become almost unbearably noisy within about eight seconds. Don’t discount it though, there’s a special kind of joy to be found watching yourself swing a cartoon bat at a swarm of bugs. Read our full review here.

The Shoot

It’s a light-gun-style rail shooter set among a range of movie-inspired scenes. You have to blast your way through levels to impress a director and land another role. Sounds like Duck Hunt for the NES with some extra narrative clipped on. Not a bad thing at all if you ask me.

Kung Fu Rider

Probably the most bizarre inclusion in the launch line-up. Made by the same studio that brought you Ape Escape, the peculiarities are perhaps to be expected. It seems to consist of skidding down a Japanese street on an office chair while the PSEye takes photos of you. We’re not sure, will someone let us know?

Racquet Sports

Another title from Ubisoft, showing the studio’s backing for the new control system is firm. It does exactly what it says on the box. Choose from a variety of racquet sports and take on the AI or a human opponent in another natural fit for motion controllers.

Tumble

Probably one of the best ways to show the precision of the technology. Tumble is a game in which you stack blocks on top of each other to build a tower. It sounds simple but you have to get the placement just right in order to avoid the sight of your towering erection falling messily to the floor. Read our review here.

Flight Control

Ingenious, compelling, fun and cheap. This is probably the Launch weekend’s must-have title for Move. There’s not a lot that we can say without going back over our gushing review but rest assured that if you buy this you will most likely not regret it.

Patched-in Support

Tiger Wood PGA Tour Golf 2011

Golf and motion control are a perfect fit. The Wii has been doing it for years and Move’s extra precision means that the most realistic simulation of the game can be even more realistic. The patch is available now when you start up the game.

EyePet

The US release of this was actually held back to go along with Move. It’s such a natural fit for the control system that it will make you wonder why you ever bothered with that magic card thing. The patch is free and available on loading the disc so existing EyePet owners can’t really lose. Read our full review here.

High Velocity Bowling

I thought it was odd that there was no 10-Pin Bowling game included with Sports Champions until I realised that this was available from the PSN. It seems that this has always been there, waiting for motion control support to come along.

Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition

Play Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition as if it was Resident Evil 4 on the Wii. No bad thing if you ask me. This is probably the first implementation of Move with what many will arrogantly consider to be a “proper game” so it will be interesting to see how it goes down with the self-proclaimed “hardcore” while they wait for Killzone 3 and SOCOM 4.

Heavy Rain (Sept 22nd)

Already utilised PlayStation’s older method of motion control, the SixAxis but Move support should make what was already an immersive experience even more intense. The patch is listed as being available for (free) download on the 22nd of September but there’s a demo on the store if you can’t wait that long.

Planet MiniGolf

This had some seriously tricky controls which made it extremely difficult to be precise with. Move could fix all that and make it just feel natural. Everyone loves a bit of minigolf so here’s hoping that swinging your imaginary golf clubs in Planet MiniGolf makes that game finally fulfil its great potential.

Hustle Kings

Shiny balls controlled by glowing balls. Hustle Kings is definitely a competitor for the title of best pool game on the PlayStation and Move support should reinforce that claim. I just hope I don’t have to enact the motions of leaving my 50p on the table and buying the next round when I’m inevitably beaten.

So that’s about it for the first weekend but there’s a lot more coming in the weeks and months after launch. What about you, what did you pick up with your Move controllers? What has been your most fun experience with it so far? What do you plan on getting over the next few weeks?

  1. I played the Move today in the Playstation Hub in Dublin, and wasnt too impressed with the software, except SOCOM 4. Maybe its just because of the environment i played it in…

    • What games did you play?

      • SOCOM, Sports Champions, Time Crisis, Start the Party and Tiger Woods. I think it was just the way they had it set up, the controller kept losing calbration and the camera would stop picking it up. I have to say, SOCOM was pretty great.

      • And Time Crisis was rubbish…I did also get to play GT5, Killzone 3 and Motorstorm and Wipeout in 3D. Anyone who can get to Dublin should head there and check it out!

      • I’d have thought Time Crisis a fairly safe bet, seeing as it’s usually a fairly solid series in my experience.

Was the problem the game or the controller? Just curious, as that’s the only dedicated first run Move title I thought looked good.

  2. The Shoot isn’t released until 29th October. Not exactly a launch title is it ?!

  3. Nice wee synopsis there! I’m even now taking breaks and still haven’t played all the demos.

Not that I’m not excited, It’s just I like to have a rest and reflection period these days. (Damn aging lol)

  4. I’m having a blast with the move, like many others I purchased Sports Champions to go with 2 Moves 1 Navi (I already had a PSEye)

    I think it’s great.

Subsequently I’m now somewhat sore, my neck is stiffer than a really stiff thing, my back burns and my feet ache.

It’s great, I know I should have been getting more exercise, but could never be arsed, I know it’s sad, but finally I have a reason to ‘Move’ (Sorry)

I’ve only scratched the surface, but Table Tennis is rather well done, the spin is cool. The Gladiator Duel is more physical than I expected and good.

I’ve tried HVB and have to admit to not liking the move patch at all. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it just doesn’t work for me.

I’ll wait for the Heavy Rain patch before I try that rather than downloading the demo.

I’m really looking forward to playing all the rest of the demos and games.

    • I had my doubts about the move but i can see why the wii is so popular, the move is awesome

  5. hopefully more move demos will come out in the coming weeks :D

    • I have the feeling we might not get many more Move demos for a while, it seems like we’ve got demos for games that are still a while from being released but who knows what new stuff could be announced in the meantime, so yes hopefully :)

  6. Right, quick heads up for you on RUSE and FCHD:

Flight Control HD – as mentioned earlier in the comments, unplug everything and take the batteries out of your BD remote if you have one. That is the only way I could get it to work. Didn’t seem to matter what controller port the Move was set to.

    RUSE:

Just played through missions 3 and 4 (did the first two with the gamepad). It takes a bit of getting used to, the reticule is quite sensitive by default, but after half an hour I got used to it and it is significantly more intuitive than using the sixaxis controller. Unlike Hustle Kings, I definitely prefer to play this with the Move.

How it works: the key mappings for the four face buttons are the same as on the sixaxis/DS3, holding down T lets you pan and zoom pretty smoothly by pointing the Move. Selection is done with a cursor but as when using the gamepad it snaps to the nearest item. You point at the target and press X (or square to select all similar units), then point again at the enemy or destination and press X to issue the order.

If you have a Navi there are some options available. You are supposed to be able to hold down L2 to do a circular selection, and L1 to toggle/tab between units. I couldn’t get the Navi to do anything at all, perhaps you need to turn it on before you load the game or something. However it is optional and I was perfectly able to play using just the Move.

    Recommended.

    • You should try and get the Navi working with it, I tried the demo and the ability to bring up a circular selection with the navi and then ‘paint’ the units you want to select is easily the best thing abot Move with RUSE – very flexible.

  7. It’s my birthday next week so I have to wait patiently to see if my wide has taken the hint. Already bought flight control just in case. Works ok with a DS3. Can’t wait to use a move with it though.

    • Just a heads up for you. If you want anything for your birthday do not call them your “wide”!

      • Oops. Typed that on my phone and its done the predictive text thing.

  8. I got the move starter pack, extra move controller, sports champions which is amazing especially disk golf, start the party, racket sports and hustle kings.
Already own toy story 3 not tried it yet though, heavy rain, eye pet,HVB, pain and resident evil.
Cant wait for the full version of TV Superstars the demo is funny.

  9. Just found a littlewoods.com code which came from an existing customer, just used it and have grabbed the starter pack for £30.00. It’s priced at a ridiculous £55.00 but the code gives £25.00 off. ZQ674. Presume it’ll work for everyone.

  10. unfortunately i will only be able to get the move on Wednesday, but i am really looking forward to playing resident evil 5 and sports champions. its gonna be AWESOME!!
