UKIE/GFK Chart-Track has announced that last week was the biggest grossing week of all time for video games software sales.
Week 45, 2010 saw video games software sales in the UK reach an estimated £113.8m. The previous best was £107.6m back in week 52, 2008.
Call of Duty: Black Ops was a major factor, selling a whopping 2m units in the UK over 5 days and generating an estimated £81.9m. Apparently this is up “13% in units over previous record breaker ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (1.8m) and up 21% in terms of revenue (£67.4m for MW2).”
Kinect also made its mark, with eight of the peripheral’s launch games debuting in the Top 40.
Michael Rawlinson, Director General of video games trade body UKIE, had the following to say:
“The video games and interactive entertainment industry has already seen a great start to quarter 4 2010 and the success of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Microsoft’s Kinect adds to this. The positive sales figures of titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops, new hardware launches like Kinect, the emergence of casual/mobile games like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope and social networking games such as Farmville show that video games and other forms of interactive entertainment continue to be played by more people than ever – with 1 in 3 people in the UK now being gamers.”

Charting respectably in the highest ever week of sales is a pretty fine achievement for all those in the chart
Gamoc
Hold on. £113.8m? And Black Ops did £81.9m of that? Holy shit, that’s insane.
Raen
Yup, outsold every game in the chart by 2.5 to 1
Raen
The thing is it doesn’t look all that great with Black Ops excluded. Also be interested to see what GT5 does now it’s locked in

An interesting thing about GT5 would be seeing the PS3/360 on NfS sales, Obviously they’re both wildly different games, but as people only have so much money you’d think that NfS sales would barely register on the PS3 with everyone saving their money till the following week’s mega-release that a lot of people have been waiting so long for.
Raen
A little bit of me hopes that NFS outsells GT5 and proves you can’t delay stuff forever.
djhsecondnature
I don’t see GT5 breaking records for initial sales but could well do for overall sales. Think it will have a huge length of sales.

I was debating wether to get NFS:HP but now I know GT5 is out on 24th I’ll be giving it a miss this time.
Dan Lee
I hope NFS sells well as it looks to be amazing. Fingers crossed.

I dont think GT5 will break this record. I think it’s sales will be more sustained for a longer period though.

Remember how Uncharted2 was in the charts for about 6 months, the same as all FIFAs, Fable 2 & Forza were… I think GT5 will be the same, it will be a title that is bought alongside console sales for months to come
BrendanCalls
Agreed.
Also from a personal view, and Im sure I will not alone in this, I will be waiting for the reviews and the 2-3 week after release word of mouth reaction before I purchase.
stonyk
you’ll need to wait a few weeks for all the patches to come in. Expecting a lot of bugs on initial release :-)

I’m not bothered what sells more i just want the games that i want on my shelf
Dlaf42
you have to remember if a game does not sell well then there is a good chance a another game like it wont be made.So the games you want on your self could get less and less.Do you think if fifa was doing really bad numbers that ea would still make fifa year after year, its all a business now movies, games anything really, if it does not sell well it does not get the funding next time around. sad but true.
RadicalMave07
1-3 people are gamers…WOW that is ALOT.
lets hope it grows even more, its great for gaming as a whole.
Charmed_Fanatic
just thinking that … its come along way for 1-3
