TSA’s Top 100 of 2011 – #50 Far Cry 3

The big question isn’t if Far Cry 3 exists (it does, they’re working on it), but whether or not it’s going back to Far Cry 2’s dusty and dangerous setting of Africa. If they keep with tradition, of course, changing the location of each game like they did with the first, that crazy rumour of Far Cry 3 heading to Antarctica might be more on the money than most people think.

It would be hard for Ubisoft to turn their backs on the Dark Continent, however; especially after spending so much time and effort building an engine that can render both the arid and temperate environs of an East African country so well.

Abandoning the quasi-speculative bioengineering concepts of Crytek’s Far Cry 1, Ubisoft Montpelier’s realistic, open-planned African jaunt was received well by those who prefer their action a little more grounded and like it when their guns jam due to dirt or degradation. Crazy fools. So, we’re definitely up for another safari excursion.

Where (both literally and figuratively) the French studio goes with Far Cry 3, we honestly can’t tell. Considering the title hasn’t even popped up on earnings calls of late, don’t be surprised if this particular entry re-appears on a far-off TSA’s Top 100 Games of 2012 compendium. If one such thing ever exists.

  1. far cry 2 could have really been something if it wasn’t one of the most frustrating games ever…

with a map that big, sometimes you just want to explore without being chased and stopped by a car load of gun toting locals every (literally) 30 seconds…

or you clear a roadblock/checkpoint, drive up the road, turn around and its pretty much already repopulated with hostiles…

this is where fallout got it right, you’re not accosted every 50 metres you walk, sometimes you won’t see an enemy for ages…

    • and far cry antarctica?

couldn’t think of anything more boring personally… the only interesting bit would be shooting polar bears, seals and killer whales… what a bland environment to base a game on…

      • I couldn’t agree more Joe. God I was sick of those enemy occupied check points, if I’d killed them once I’d killed them a thousand times. Overall I thought game was really fun but they do need to tweak the enemy AI to just leave you alone for one goddamn minute lol!

I also played Fallout and i thought they got that pretty much spot on.

    • I agree with the first sentence so much, Joe.

      • it was a shame as i enjoyed it to a point, until it just got so bloody frustrating that i didn’t even complete it . I was especially norked off when all the team of mercs got had off ( i remember reloading one mission repeatedly caus my guy kept getting killed like the stupid sonofabitch he was )

    • Yup, frustrating game saved by the fantastic Map making feature and online with your mates play.

  2. I really enjoyed farcry 2, but it wasn’t without it’s flaws. Respawning checkpoints, huge drives across a large map (though the bus helped with this) and a ridiculous trophy for collecting all the diamonds (not to mention the dumb online trophies). Still, as a single player experience, at a time when there weren’t many good games on ps3, i really enjoyed it.

  3. i really tried to like farcry 2, but as people already said, it had more than its share of flaws. especially the respawning checkpoints where extremely annoying. also the slogan “go everywhere do everything” (or somethinh along those lines) was a joke… you couldnt even go half of the places you wanted… invisible walls and 2″ ledges you couldnt climb where everywhere…
if they fix that, farcry 3 could be great… (although im not sure if an antarctica setting would be interesting enough…)

  4. I really enjoyed Far Cry 2 – The tactical elements of how to approach each of the settlements & the way that you could utilise fire & distractions etc was (at times) genius. However I have to agree with the common complaints that enemy checkpoints were always repopulated 2 seconds after clearing them out & moving out of that square mile (or was it metre – Seemed like it!) of jungle. I don’t care how efficient your army is, that is just plain unrealistic! & I am pretty sure that no-one particularly wanted to grind for anywhere near the required amount of time on an online portion of a game. Some masochists did of course for the coveted shiny platinum, but I have better things to be doing with my time I am afraid.
Far Cry 3 will be a day one purchase for me if: I don’t have to spend half of my waking day for 3 years playing the game online for a bronze trophy. If enemies at checkpoints stay dead & said checkpoint is not repopulated by the enemy for at least 24 to 48 in game hours, as this I could live with (would at least be more realistic). It would also be nice if vehicles in the game travel at more than 5-10mph meaning I don’t spend my whole Saturday travelling to an objective just to be slaughtered when I get there & have to repeat the journey all over again.
    That is all.

    • If the developer is half-decent they should learn from their mistakes. Hopefully then, they’ll sort out the flaws already mentioned here which would mean Far Cry 3 could really be brilliant.

  5. I’m dreading it the enemy ai was awful I mean do these guys use radar!? and it would’ve been better if it had co-op it just wasn’t that exciting.

  6. this is the 1st ive heard of far cry 3. anyway, i only ever rented far cry 2 (i know – stupid) but i didnt like how there wasnt any wildlife in such a big environment. it needs to be more like red dead redemption. i agree with everyone else too, those pesky bad guys where everywhere

  7. I absolutely hated far cry 2, it has to be one of the worst games i have played, where as on the other hand, I loved the original far cry on PC, what was so wrong with that? bring back the tropical setting i say, instead of a boring dusty brown environment.

  8. i loved farcry 2, i can only farcry 3 improves on it in nearly every sense because it had a lot of room for improvement

  9. I still play FC2, only the map editer and online mind, the map editer is awesome and i hope that far cry 3 continues in the tradition. single player i only did about 2 missions.

although for now i would be happy with some item dlc for FC2’s editer

    • You are missing out a little bit – The singleplayer game gets really good about half hour to an hour in & becomes quite addictive. I would say to give the singleplayer more of a chance, but just be aware of the issues mentioned above! :)

      • thats pretty

      • thats pretty much why i didnt do the single player, its just too much to treck for miles just to die again.

and to be honest the story doesnt interest me in the slightest

  10. I personally disliked far cry 2 as it was trying to be better than it actually was. The fire spreading actually was a grid of flammable objects which made that look poor and no matter where you are shot you always dig a buller out of the same leg (am I getting the right game? If not correct me). It could have been good but had too many flaws. Far Cry 3 probably won’t improve on many of the minor flaws that added up to ruin what could have been a good first game.
