Earlier in the month we brought you the news that Kinect sales had passed the one million mark. Microsoft’s Major Nelson has now confirmed that worldwide Kinect sales have passed 2.5 million units, taking 25 days to do so:
“We got some new numbers to share: With the help of Black Friday last week, Kinect has now sold over 2.5 Million units around the world.”
Impressive numbers, and with Christmas around the corner it’s looking positive for Microsoft’s projected target of five million Kinect units sold by the end of the year.

Uh.
Whilst neither Move nor Kinnect have had any brilliant games that reallt stand out to me, I really do feel Move deserves a bit more success than its had. Sure, its a bit me too – but so is Kinnect in terms of the eyetoy. However we all knew – and predicted- that Kinnect would sell better due to the marketing push.
Just wish Sony would pull their fingers out! I see an advert for Kinnect atleast once a day. And Move? Maybe twice a week and the adverts for them are crap anyway.
Still, atleast I’ve got Dance Central and Sports Champions, by far the best both have to offer.
a inferior race
Advertising does wonders for any product. I am fortunate enough to own a 360 and PS3 and I just want Kinect so much more. I actually attribute this to Sony not bothering to tell me what HD Wiimote can do whereas MS have made quite clear that HD eyetoy 2.0 is amazing (even if isn’t).
bajere
exactly correct! i been saying all along Kinect will do well, even though its piss poor from what iv seen. Advertising wins every time! if Sony pulled there finger out move would take off i think

My major question, is Kinect any good? I have Move and all though it’s an impressive bit of tech it seems to be lacking in quality games.
My 6yr old son finds Move hard to play and we had a trip to Tesco’s last week where he had a chance to play the footie on Kinect Sport’s. He found it hard to actually access the games he wanted to play with the spinning icon appearing then disappearing, we also found that it would score goals on it’s own!
Cheers for any info!

I wonder how many Kinnects will be in the ‘unused gadget’ category in six months time.

2.5 million

Sony – this is a defining moment. This is one of the biggest warning signs to let you know that you can market ANYTHING! Hell, you nearly convinced the world to accept MiniDisc as the default format. You can do it again with any hardware.
Advertise properly. There are people willing to part with money for any old tat and Move is actually good!

Urgh… minidiscs… don’t remind me!

What sony needs is to define what do they want with move. You cant attract both hardcore and casual gamers with the device.
The fast money is on the casual market (not sure on the long run) and microsoft has already gone this way, same as wii did, but at least with a “cool” new device with great and different possibilites.
(not that i have the slightest interest in it, appart from the voice commands).
and Sony? sony tries to sell you an old technology already on the market for several years with not much of a cataloge for casual nor hardcore gamers and almost no advertising.
Casuals dont feel attracted to it because they havent heard about it and even if they do, they dont see the difference with their cool and fashionable wii, and hardcores dont like it because there is no games for it, and it really doesnt improve the experience much from a good old dual shock.
Sony has already lost the battle against kinect, just wait for christmas.
bunimomike
Absolutely. Look for a demographic then go assault them with advertising. Works for most companies each and every day.
*sad sigh*

A whole lotta 360s (bundles) sold too i’d bet.

How does it compare to move? Just tell me that.

Toot toot… “This is an express train only. Next stop: Mediocrity.”

Final destination: Money Town.

If you look to your right you’ll see people dancing, if you look to your left you’ll see people working out. For your safety please do not look behind or infront of the train as it may derail.
beeje13
don’t think it will get to five milion, after all, most people getting it for christmas would have already brought it as microsoft advertised it as ‘low in supply’ increasing the hype.
jayjay119
Well, well done Kinect? It’s not really that big a deal, Move sold 2.5 million in 30 days so the selling field is quite level I think. All this shows is that some people with more money than sense have probably rushed out and bought this due to the hype.
jayjay119
Plus that 2.5 for move doesn’t even seem to be counting Asia or Australasia into the mix.
cc_star
I wish there was a way to find out how many homes Move is in, for example, I alone, count for 3 of those Move sales, and everybody I know bought at at least two bits of kit.
2.5m Kinect sales means its in 2.5m homes
jayjay119
I see your point, plus I suppose the sales figures for move don’t even count the sales of the nav controler or stuff like that either, I’d like to see a comprehensive review of Move’s sales as a brand not just of the action stick itself!

The main problem that Sony’s move has is that there’s hardly any advertising for it. generaly speaking nearly every other tv ad is for kinect or wii, yet nothing for ps3 or move…i haven’t seen one advert for GT5 on tv. It seems that america have the advertising money campain with the very funny Kevin butler.
cc_star
GT5 sells itself, ad money would be wasted on advertising it. They do need to advertise Move but to be honest I’ve seen just as many Move ads as I have Kinect one’s

I must be watching the wrong channels lol
