Sega Announce ‘Binary Domain’

The House of Hedgehog have announced a new squad based shooter entitled ‘Binary Domain’ for PS3 and Xbox 360. Set in the year 2080 in Tokyo, the game challenges you, the leader of an international peace keeping force, to fight of waves of robotic invaders.

Fallen asleep yet? Future city, robot invaders, international peace keeping force, could Sega come up with a more generic game? Even the title is bland; Binary Domain sounds like a web hosting company rather than an epic shooter. Thankfully the game does have a couple of new ideas courtesy of Toshihiro Nagoshi, creator of the Yakuza series.

“What I wanted to create this time was a dramatic and energetic sci-fi shooter. When you hear sci-fi you may think of cold, clinical environments but with Binary Domain I wanted to combine this with a deep human drama.

“The keyword we have in mind for this project is ‘Life’. I wanted to make something that will be accepted by both the Japanese and Western markets, and this fundamental theme is something everyone knows but which the full extent of can be difficult to grasp.”

Combining fast-paced gun battles with ‘human drama’ is an intriguing concept, and it will be interesting to see how this will work. From my experience if you are pinned down in the middle of a fire-fight you don’t usually holster your weapons and have a heart-to-heart with your partner to tell him you’re dating his sister.

File under ‘Could Be Interesting’ and check out the teaser trailer below, no release date has been given for the title.

  1. Looked like IRobot with a hint of the Terminator thrown in.

  2. Here come the “Looks like X with a mix of Y” comments…

  3. Looks awful, looks like a PS1 Game during a Cut Scene….

Will give it a chance though….

  4. What engine is this game using? It looks like GRIN’s DIESEL engine, but I doubt anyone other than GRIN (R.I.P.) would use it.
The ending of the trailer seemed a bit too LOST-ish, just replace the robot legs by a DHARMA briefcase. Not that it is a bad thing.

  5. I’m going to make a prediction that the 2 main guys end up getting it on. There is clearly a lot of sexual tension there. Also I like how the lady is only allowed a pistol against the hoards of robot death machines, obviously because her little lady arms couldn’t carry a bigger gun. And the black dude is fast, beating a flying grenade up a flight of stairs! I do hope they expand on this rich and unique world they have created, it looks wonderful.

  6. They should’nt try to appeal to westerns… just make the game and add powerful-lasers beams than relying on the usual shell-based weaponory.

  7. Except for the Yakuza series I’m starting to wonder if Sega has an original bean in it.

  8. Sounds like Vanquish O_O

  9. You haven’t even read what it’s about in detail, for example the Famitsu interview with Nagoshi that first revealed the game itself, so how can you claim it’s “bland” or “generic” (based on a shitty press release nonetheless, great research wow)? In the Famitsu interview Nagoshi revealed that the game will be set in a dystopian neo Tokyo that is divided into ghettoes, a broken down version of current Tokyo, and a modern futuristic city, and the conflict between these two vastly different places. Moreover, there are life decisions one must make, similar to the Yakuza series the team is renowned for. Next time, do your research first (don’t know Japanese? then don’t talk about shit you don’t know) before plastering inane claims about a game you’ve not even wasted two minutes doing research on.

  10. Yakuza 4. a beautiful, no stunning looking game

this? a terrible game which suffers for being multiplatform instead of exclusive.

if this game was just PS3 or just 360 then im sure it would be a lot better.
