Cannon Fodder 3 Announced

Ah, Sensible Software. Responsible for many lost hours in my youth thanks to Sensible Soccer, Sensible World of Soccer and Cannon Fodder. Sensible Software are no more, unfortunately, and despite Codemasters picking up licensing rights there hasn’t been any movement on sequels for many years. Until now.

This morning GFI, a Russian publisher, has announced that they will be working on a third game in the Cannon Fodder series under license from Codies. This is great news, the PC and Xbox 360 (let’s hope they announce a PS3 version too) game promises the classic isometric viewpoint and all the elements that made the original games such fun:

Several military groups of Europe, Asia and Africa have made a military alliance to establish dictatorship by joint efforts. Your goal is to stop them at any cost… Even with a price of thousands lives of soldiers named “cannon fodder”, who are ready to die everywhere and every time it’s needed. ‘Cause it’s their work.

You have a small army which consists of only “cannon fodder” soldiers, who are ready to rush into fight with the enemy, sparing neither effort nor oneself. The player will have to pass several episodes full of cartoon violence among different locations, and the Earth is not the limit – it’s time to go into open space and show the enemy “who’s daddy”.

We are very excited about this, and not only because Cannon Fodder and its sequel were excellent games in the mid-90s which could do very well as modern downloadable titles (format is unconfirmed just now). Hopefully this re-licensing of ex-Sensible IP will pave the way for a reboot/re-release of their Soccer game too…

Update: We’re hearing reports that this might only be scheduled for release in Russia. That would be frustrating, let’s hope Codies bring it to a wider audience.

  1. Hopefully this doesn’t end up like the PS2 Sensible Soccer game a few years back…

    • That one passed me by, glad it was so crap that I never heard of it because I would surely have burned £30 quid on it had I known of it.

  2. Happy days though if they get it right, many a happy hour I spent air juggling enemy mooks :D

    • Joooooooppppppppsssssss nnnoooooooooo!!!!!

  3. Go up to your brother, Kill him with your gun
Leave him lying in his uniform, Dying in the sun

    • Rust your bullets with his tears
Let me tell you about his years

      From Iron Maiden =D

  4. Great excuse to post this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7XiXQ6wEyM

Press Play On Tape (the ultimate geek band) playing the theme tune using game controllers!

  5. It needs a touch device version, Android and iPhone etc.

  6. WOW !
That’s a sequel that’s been a long time in the making, think I have the first two on floppy !

  7. Your SH*TT*NG me! I would love this, please get it right though, even if it’s a HD remake of the orignal I would be happy!

Alwways found it poingent and touching that every soldier that died was represented by a cross on the green hills in the background of the menu screen!

    Epically good game!

    • i remember that well and off the top of my head i remember one was called Jools ! I used to try and get as far as i could without losing the early characters ! Hang on im sure there was a Jops as well.
Surely this needs a mouse to play or perhaps move support , i hear Flight Control works well .

  8. Wasn’t Cannon Fodder a poor mans Command & Conquer?
I do have fond memories of Amiga Cannon Fodder though, i’ll keep an eye on Cannon Fodder 3, especially if it gets a PS3 release. But, i’ll pay more attention to Visceral Games’ reboot of Command & Conquer…..

    • It’s probably more akin to Trenches on the iPhone than C&C.

    • They were nothing alike! Both awesome though.

    • Yeah, no. Cannon fodder had no build/collect type elements just some minor weapon management bits really

    • No, Cannon fodder was not like command and conquer. It was much better too!

  9. Best news I’ve heard all week, I could see it working quite well with Move.

  10. You realise this is only for release in Russia…

    • Wasn’t Tetris originally Russian and Nintendo bullied the developers for the exclusive?

      • Seems a little odd, since Russia would barely have emerged from the Iron Curtain when the original game came out I can’t see there being as much of a return market there as there might be in Europe in general.
