It has been confirmed over on the US PlayStation Blog that the PSN will be updated with a whole bunch of new avatars based on Tron: Evolution, Hoard, Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. These are ‘premium’ avatars, although Sony is saying they “should be quite affordable.”
Hopefully SCEE will be announcing something similar for our side of the pond.

doubt we’ll see these any time soon, the u.s already has hundreds of avatars we have been wait for,for months. also think that using trophies earned would be a good alternative as avatars and would also add a bit of prestige to earning them.

I’m not particularly bothered by avatars. One decent one could last me a year, rather than going for a new one each week.
