Star Wars: The Old Republic Delayed

Considering EA’s Q3 2011 FY results suggests shareholders should have a strong brandy to hand, news that PC MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic is now be delayed to FY 2012 won’t make their light reading this morning any easier.

Previously earmarked for release this spring, the Jedi vs Sith online lightsaber-fest is now expected in September, though a date as late of March 2012 is possible.

Thankfully, when it does hit, CEO John Riccitiello reckons the title will only need half a million subscribers to stay in the black. He said:

“500,000 subscribers saw the game is substantially profitable but it’s not the kind of thing that we would write home about. Anything north of 1m subscribers is a very profitable business.

So it’s our view that we can be very successful without fundamentally challenging the market leader [World of Warcraft] because we think we’ll probably hit the smaller competitors harder when we get out there.

Of course, we have no particular ambition to be a distant number two. Our ambitions are higher than that, but we throttle back a little bit relative to our financial projections.”
