Sony Announces Cloud Saving Service For PS Plus

Over on the EU PS Blog it has been announced that as of tomorrow PS Plus members will be getting a cloud based save service. After downloading firmware update 3.60 you will be able to have up to 1000 saves, or 150mb of data.

“To do so, simply highlight the game save you want to store in the [Saved Data Utility (PS3)], press the triangle button to bring up the options, select “copy” and then select “Online Storage” as the destination. In turn, you can access your Online Storage list via [Saved Data Utility (PS3)] when signed into PlayStation Network on a friend’s PS3 and download your stored game saves to carry on your game from where you left off.

If the developer has chosen to implement copy protection on their game saves, you can still copy those files to Online Storage but there will be a 24 hour period, after each save, before you can then download them on any PS3.

If your PlayStation Plus subscription expires then you will no longer be able to access Online Storage until you renew your subscription. However, any game saves stored will be kept for six months and you will be able to access them as before when you renew the subscription, as long as you do so within that six month period.”

  1. Niiiiiiiiiiiice!

  2. Great news, and lovely to see more features rolling out. Now where is my cross game chat? (Oh no he di’nt!)

  3. Wonder how many subscriptions will be purchased over the next 24 hours.

  4. This means I can get saves off the 60 gig like NFS Prostreet and get it one my 500 gig. No more swapping drives, I like this. Now to spend the 50 bucks, mmmm.

  5. Hopefully if subscription counts jumps dramatically it will encourage them to add more features. Now just need them to change the auto downloader to manual update instead of switching the console on and off to download patches in the background while playing killzone 3 :)

  6. So, back-up all your current saved game progress and then everytime you progress further in a game save it in-game, then don’t forget to quit to xmb and upload the save file to the server. I wonder how long it will take to upload each file?
New features are always welcome but it’s not exactly the smoothest integration, online back-ups of saves is handy but if it’s not automated it’s not really that much more inconvenient to use a USB stick.
Pity, i thought this would be the thing to make me subscribe but looks like i’ll be holding off another while. (I’m not interested in PS+ for the content btw so the other features need to be right for me.)

  7. So what’s the benefit of this exactly?

Is it just that if your hard drive packs up, you can re-download your game saves?

It’s basically an insurance policy no?

    • And if you go over to a mate’s house all you need to do is log into your PSN account and voila, you have your game saves

  8. Sweet! Whoop whoop another little nice add on, well happy!

No it’s not an insurance policy, it’s a Sony saves you’re game policy as long as your a ps plus member.

  9. I just can’t see what there is that’s so exciting about this! No idea why everyone is getting so wet.

Surely you’d hope your hdd wouldn’t break in the first place?!

    • I’m sure as long as you hope, maybe even wish upon a star, your HDD doesn’t break, it will be fine ;)

  10. I want dropbox on my PS3 :)

    • Definitely an interesting idea, not quite sure how well it would work, or how it would be implemented, but interesting none the less.
