PS3 Firmware 3.60 Lands, Any Secrets?

Sure, the big thing PS3 Firmware 3.60 brings us this morning might be the cool new cloud saving for PlayStation Plus owners – and at 92 comments at the time of writing it’s clearly a big deal – but that can’t be the only thing, can it?

Well, it looks like it might be apart from one minor tweak – despite past Firmware updates bringing all kinds of undocumented secrets to the table, 3.60 seems to do little else apart from give Plus users the chance to back-up their save games – most of them anyway, some games aren’t yet compatible with the new service.

Still, we’re hearing this morning from sources that suggest 3.60 has a revamped security structure – words like ‘unhackable’ are being banded around and we’re hoping that’s true.

But I digress.  That minor tweak I mentioned?  You can now select different time periods for the controller to auto-sleep.  Yep, it’s on the release notes, where you’d think Sony would also mention the cloud saving…

Which reminds me, can we have the option to upload more than one save at a time, please chaps?

  1. so if you’re a plus subscriber, and assuming any music or videos you have on your PS3 you also have elsewhere, this does away with the need for the nast, slow, unreliable backup system on the PS3, right?!

    • Its up to 150MB in size or 1000 save files….
Its ideal for game saves, not Game Data.

    • No, only PS3 save files. You can’t even use it to back up PS1 or PS2 saves

      • yes but they’re not copy protected right? PS3 I can understand but with PS1 saves I would just copy them to the PSP or any USB/MS storage.

  2. So us mere peasents get nothing while the PS+ers get a new feature?

Why do i get the feeling there will be another firmware update in a few weeks time?

    • I think your missing the point of all updates, its not to give the user free stuff if they have paid for a PS+ or not.

  3. Very tempted to plus now, but there’s still far too much crap with it that I’m not interested in. If there was a lite version with just cloud saving and auto updates then I’d subscribe

  4. Was a very pleasant surprise to find out about this today. Better late than never is what I say. (I’ve finally gotten over losing my protected saves.)

  5. Jesus – we get a GREAT new feature and people are moaning about “Damn Sony, why can’t we upload multiple save files at once”. It really doesn’t take that much effort to do them individually, and rather that than lose them. No pleasing some people…

And the slight security update is great timing for the latest MW2 patch – double whammy. Hopefully no more hackers!

    • I’m not moaning, I am very pleased with the idea and that I finally have it, however you would have thought that they would have sorted out how to upload the data before rushing it out. Going through one by one is time consuming especially with the saves for Oblivion (about 5MB each), fallout 3 (12MB) and Fallou NV (8MB). I spent ages watching these upload today. I only did selected saves too in an attempt to save time.

  6. everybody’s missing the big news, 360 firmware update on a ps3. :)

and yes, a copy multiple option is really needed now.

  7. Rather than have a multiple copy, wouldn’t it be better to auto upload when the PS3 turns on to check for auto updates.

  8. Just downloaded a few Avatars, after completed it now tells you where to change it. What a useful feature.

  9. handy being able to change the sleep time on the controller.

  10. And anyone else want a Search function on their “previous downloaded” content….I have to currently search through 600+ items to re-download something? :(

    • oh yeah, i wanted to download an bit of free dlc from when dead space 1 was released, had to scroll down for bloody ages to find it.

some sort of filter option would be nice too, like only show full games or only dlc.

    • Couldn’t you just go on the store look up the game then download whatever your after. Not really that time consuming.

      • True but I have quite a lot of exclusive DLC from pre-orders etc that aren’t available on the Store, so I have to search my history.

      • Good point, there is usually a Donwloadable Content option on the Start Game screen these days in my experience.

      • True – I’m not moaning, I just assume it would be fairly easy to add since the Store already has a search function. Or perhaps the Store search tool could include all your downloads, not just the ones on the Store.
